I don't understand why people say this phrase. Apple pie came from Germany. So when someone says "as american as apple pie", do they mean "as american as something that came from another country that we've altered a bit to make our own"?
Are you trying to say your old or something? I've heard that phrase once and wanted to use a witty comment about the movie American Pie. If thats American, I don't know what is, I think I'm confused scared 10 year old that can't stop rambling.
I don't know about apple pie, but one of my friends who used to live in china says that most american chinese food is completely different from chinese chinese food.
So we may not have apple pie, but we do have chinese food as the one thing created in america.
so the phrase should be altered to "As american as chinese food"

It has nothing to do with the origin of apple pie or taking something and adapting it for American use, but what apple pie symbolizes. It may represent traditional American values.

o.o Maybe you should edit that post to make that clearer. Poe's Law seems to apply to more than just religion.
Something doesn't have to be invented in your country to be symbolic of it. Apple pie was a customary desert in a lot of american homes in the "heartland."
