I just graduated from Parris Island, South Carolina, USMC Recruit Training Depot. Its been 3 months of hell and now I'm home, its 1 AM, and I've just finished my third dinner. So, does anyone have any questions about boot camp while I finish up this Taco Bell?

And no, I have no excuse for being on this website right now other than I want to be.

No, actually. The DIs never say anything funny because it detracts from their purpose of being intimidating. They DO every once in awhile try to crack a joke but its never like FMJ. And your Senior Drill Instructor is actually the nicest one, at least in my case, all he did was make speeches. He almost never did the actual punishments and almost never killed the Platoon.

We had a killhat for that.

Why are you willing to militarily devote your life in the name of a country? You sign your life away to defend whatever politics are pushed in time and space, and you are obligated to stand for (with force) whatever the current populistic trend is, regardless of what you personally think, if you think at all. Why would you be so blindingly faithful?

Thats partially BS, and you know it. Certain wars, like Vietnam and the Iraq war, are political and wrong, and being involved in them is a waste of life. But, serving your country is an honor. I would not go to Iraq, but of another country was invading the US, than sign me up. I would die for to protect my country and my family. Thats a BS liberal ideology, and one that I hope no one should follow.

Politics are hardly ever the reason anyone joins the military. In the USA, veterans receive a wealth of social benefits and requires very little academics. I did my 4 years in the Navy right out of high school and then got out. What do I have to show for it? Full tuition paid for college, cheap insurance and tons of stories of things I've done in other countries ;)

Really, A service member's loyalty is in a smaller and more personal circle. These guys are just doing their job because their boss said so, and they are fighting, just to protect their fellow co-worker right beside them.

I didn't see any indication he was a liberal. It was a good question. you say you would join if you believed in the cause; but that's not what he asked.

what were the physical requirements. (minimum required mile run time, # of push-ups and sit-ups required)? just curious if I stack up to US military standards (just got layed off. but if I met them, eh it'd be worth looking into)

this next one may sound really really stupid, but my dad has a bunch of 'Nam era base stories, and I'm sure things have changed a lot since then but . . . Does the military drug test? (because they didn't back in the day. or they did and didn't give a rats *** about thc in the urine). not tring to be a smart-***, honestly curious.

Boot Camp is done, so what's next for you? Officer School, Specialty Training (like Engineers, or special combat maneuvers, etc.)?

My point is, if you choose to be a professional soldier, you are obligated to militarily contribute to whatever the politicians of the day put you to work over, regardless of whether you agree on the politics of it or not. Being enlisted or volunteering under dire circumstances are another matter altogether. As a professional soldier, you choose to be a violent dog's body for a cause that you no longer have a say in, other than what your vote is worth. Patriotism is a Nationalistic and Populistic bogus notion, and does not bear any semblance to logic or rationality.

Well, I partially agree with you. I appolgize, but your post came off a little differently to me. It seemed a bit snide. I agree, when you sign up to be a soldier, you are going to have to follow orders. But not all wars or conflicts in need of military personel are what you say. Many times, soldiers defend innocent civlians, help after natural disaters, and provide security to weaker nations that need our help. They are not always fighting for oil or military contacts.

This is going to be a weird question, but I was curious: what if one of the new arrivals had already shaved his head beforehand?

Some morality is better than none. Someone may have something to gain, but if people are helped by that persons actions, even if deep down they are doing it for selfish reasons, than I am all for it.

The concept of morality is based on emotional Human self-preservation instinct, and that is certainly not without merit. Human emotion is what makes us who we are, but it is not absolute or rational. My point is that Human morality is very subjective, and subject to bogus political intervention.

I totally agree. Morality beyond the human scope is far different, and our morality is not always as moral as we think it is. But if someone is helped by it, than it should be seen as a positive. Perhaps there was a misunderstanding, and I appologize if I came off as pissed. I was a first, but you have clarified what you meant, and now I see we are actually in total agreement.

I see much room for continued debate, but I agree that there is no point in it in this instance. I commend you for your rational input. Have a great night, and may we meet and debate elsewhere...
