The asteroid is called Apophis? Didn't the System Lord Apophis from Stargate try to blow up the earth with a meteor in an episode?

Where's Bruce Willis and his team of He-Men when we REALLY need them?nocoolnamejim
Screw them...where is the kid who wants to act like the Hulk, he was on the boards earlier today? We could just launch him into space towards the asteroid.

Those aren't very big, especially when you consider how much of it will erode once it goes through the atmosphere.

reminds me of that episode of Futurama where the garbage ball is going to hit Earth and they build another to counter it and throw it off course.

I don't know why...

There are two space rocks which have the potential to hit the earth there's one which is 430 foot (130 meter) diameter rock that has a 1 in 3,000 chanve of hitting our planet Earth in 2048. Then theres another rock which is called Apophis, this rock is double the size of the first one and has 1 in 43,000 chance of hitting the Earth in 2036,2037,2069!!

And guess what?? We don't have the technology to even stop these huge chunks of rocks if they do head towards Earth!! We don't even have the technology to detect all of the asteroids in our solar system! And there are 6,000 huge rocks which are a danger to Earth!!

ShAbInAtOr

"and guess what"... I think it is pretty well known that we don't have huge laser beams to stop these ginormous asteroids

lol I'm sure that by 2048, or any of the other years of chance, we will have plenty of technology to launch some sort of mission to redirect the path or something.

If they do that then the earth would be destroyed by trillion's of little rocks and the nuclear explosion will also be a negative effect! :(

By the year 2048 we will have the technology to stop it. And I think the chances of it not hitting are still pretty good.

I think at least by 2048 we will have some technology that might help deflect the asteroid. Remember, you don't have to destroy the asteroid like movies tell you. You can simply shift the trajectory by maybe 1 degree and it will never bother earth again.

Given the inumerable number of asteroids in the universe, it is technically inevitable that Earth WILL be struck, and it will be destroyed by it. However, teams of scientists around the globe are developing strategies to avert, or destroy potential threats. It's just a matter of time before we can do it. The most intuitive would be to land a small rocket on the projectile, and fire it in such a way to alter it's trajectory or orbit, so as to miss Earth. NEAT STUFF. Blowing up asteroids poses a problem as some are porous, and it could conceivably just create more projectiles.

It's actually safer to deflect the asteroid than to destroy it.

Jupiter has been hit twice now in 15yrs. I think in 1994 a comet in like 9 pieces struck and we were able to watch it and just recently scientists noticed a huge earth size scar on it that we didnt see at all.

Jupiter takes asteroids that could hit Earth and sucks them in with it's gravity. In fact for earthlike planets to develop, they need a gas giant to protect it or asteroids just nail the tiny buggers all the time!

Yes and no though. Its not like its gravity is so vast that it sucks all asteroids and comets destined for earth into it. It also does a huge orbit so it isnt also in position. If you look at the moon it too has taken quite a few hits and for that matter so has the earth.

By then the Japanese will have invented their own universe, and then they will all migrate to it and then coat the mainland of Japan with PS3s as a farewell gift.

It would be easier to create a machine that can fly and gravitationally catch the asteroid and pull it away from Earth in its orbit.
