We need more moons !  I think other planets are laughing at our lack of moonliness.

Astronomers may have thought they had already detected all the satellites orbiting Neptune. They were wrong.

As one keen-eyed astronomer recently pointed out, images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope show that Neptune has another moon. Senior research scientist Mark Showalter of the SETI Institute, the private California-based organization, first discovered the new Neptune moon on July 1.

SCROLL FOR IMAGES

Designated S/2004 N 1, the moon was previously overlooked by astronomers due to its small size and the speed at which the tiny body orbits the planet -- one time every 23 hours.

Using a method similar to one often employed by action photographers, Showalter stumbled across the moon in Hubble images of Neptune taken between 2004 and 2009.

"The moons and arcs orbit very quickly, so we had to devise a way to follow their motion in order to bring out the details of the system," he said in a statement released by NASA on Monday. "It's the same reason a sports photographer tracks a running athlete -- the athlete stays in focus, but the background blurs."

The astronomer further detailed the process he used to spot Neptune's moon in a blog on Cosmic Diary:

The procedure I devised predicts where any given moon ought to move from one image to the next, and then combines the images with a "twist" that compensates for the expected motion. ... It was only when I expanded my analysis out to regions well beyond Neptunes ring system that an extra little dot turned up, over and over again. In less than a week, we went from our first detection to ten.
The finding makes S/2004 N 1 the 14th known moon of Neptune and the planet's smallest. Astronomers previously derived a majority of their discoveries about Neptune from data obtained during NASA's Voyager 2 trip to observe the planet in 1989.

As Showalter notes in his blog post, the discovery is also significant since astronomers studying Neptune's moons previously thought that the smallest moons orbit closer to the planet. However, S/2004 N 1 is located between Proteus and Larissa, Neptune's second- and third-largest moons.

Because the moon is 12 miles across and almost 3 billion miles away, orbiting a planet that outshines it many-fold. That's like asking me why I didn't see a dime 2,000 miles away while looking directly into a flashlight.

Think about Pluto. It has 5 moons, 4 of which were discovered within the last decade. We didn't know about Charon until the 1970s, and that was almost 50 years after Pluto was found.

We're always finding new moons around the gas giants because most are just so freaking tiny.

My thoughts exacltly. I used to think it was a weird set up on Mass Effect how a massive relay was by Pluto and no one seen it for 100's of years. When I see news like this though it makes it more believable.

To paraphrase Mr Adams (via HHGTTG)... "Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space."

Do you remember when Pluto was a planet? And when it didn't have multiple satellites? Planets don't emit light, they reflect it, and when they are tiny objects hundreds of millions of kilometers away, it is hard to see unless you are looking in the exact right place at the exact right time.

Because scientific research regarding space hasn't benefited society at all in the past. Also, FYI SETI has been privately funded since 1995. So no tax dollars went towards this.

Go do something about it if it bothers you so much... hell even making your own thread about it would be better than hijacking this one.

Neptune is 30AU away. One AU(Astronomical Unit) is about 150,000,000 miles (Distance from the earth to the sun). When you reach those kinds of distances, moons are very easy to miss, especially if it is very small compared to the planet.

THat's putting the cart before the horse.

We have already found (I think) a few of the so-called "Goldilocks" planets (those that are just the right distance from the sun to support a good temperate and liquid water).

We need to develop the tech to get there first which, unfortunately, is pretty much impossible right now :(

We need Kerbals!  We need cute little things to experiment with!

I actually had a dream the other night that humans had discovered a means of traveling at tremendous speeds by means of collapsing space (a valid theory of space travel) and that there were plans to visit another star. Then I woke up extremely disappointed.
