Someone tried getting away with throwing a large American Flag down the compactor. Whether or not you agree with our current government, that flag doesnt represent them anyway, it represents Americans and the country we live in. Shame on them. Im all for the First Amendment, but this is just flat out disrespectful. If they dont like living here, they could leave, eh?

What do you guys think? I personally thought he should have tried lighting it on fire, along with himself.

Not worked up. Simply stating what someone did today that was rediculous.

If I tossed a large portrait of Obama down the can, people would **** bricks.

Was it like a huge political statement where he was making a big show of putting it down the compactor? Or was it like he had a flag and nothing to do with it, so he tried to get rid of it by putting it in the compactor?

I dont know what his intentions were. Someone took it from him and hung it up.

Either way, its just something you dont do. Like screaming obscenitys at some old woman, you just dont do it.

If I saw someone desecrate, or destroy my country's flag in anyway I'd probably stand there and shrug my shoulders. It's just a flag. Sure it represents a country, but so what? I dont take offense to that.

If the flag was damaged in any way after being thrown out, it shouldn't be hung up. That's just as disrespectful. I'm the type that doesn't really care what someone does with a flag. I understand what it represents, I just don't really care.

The flag is a piece of fabric that was probably made in China anyway. I never understood why people get so upset when someone 'disrespects' the thing, I've never felt anything when looking at the flag. The people don't seem to be strong enough to realize it's just fabric though, perhaps I'm just odd...

Here in the USA, flags basically grow on on trees. If someone dumps a flag in a trash compactor, just replace the flag.

After all it is only a flag and nothing more. If they were more useful for something, I'd probably protest the disposal of one, but sadly they're not useful for other than displaying it in front of one's house, on a car, or anywhere one could possibly stick a flag.

It depends on what you believe it stands for. I think what it stands for for me is radically different than what it symbolizes for you.

Ok good point. Then should you understand that it might mean something different for another person? Maybe to you it symbolizes the great values of the American nation. Maybe to your co-worker who is a native American it symbolizes the persecution and destruction of his people and culture? Maybe to John Doe it symbolizes the negative aspects of the US society, or maybe to Random Guy X its just a piece of cloth. You have the right to revere the flag as you see fit, so everyone else has equal right to despise it as they see fit. After all, the flag is just a symbol and what it represents varies greatly between people. What you see as disrespecting the founding fathers of your nations and the values its built upon, someone might see it as respecting the founding fathers by disrespecting the a government that has completely forgotten the values of the US nation. All Im saying is, it means different things to people, so you do you, and let them do them.

Yes, I don't worry about the flag because someone can always destory it(and they will) while my believes in this country won't change. It all depends on how you precive the flag. You see it as more than a symbol, while I don't.

Don't worship the symbol... worship what it stands for.

That is the problem with a lot of symbolism throughout human history. People get caught up in the symbols without realizing what they actually mean or represent. Defend America and what it stands for... not some dyed cloth that could have been easily made into a Soviet flag.

Well this "symbol" helps remind many people exactly what they are fighting for. It reminds them that they are fighting for their way of life.

When that symbol is destroyed, some people feel like their way of life is being destroyed.

surferdude17

Meanings can take on any symbolic form. Any one symbol is a fleeting representation of the intended meaning. The meaning itself should be what you take to heart, not the symbols that represent it. I don't know of any country other than America that takes the national flag so seriously. Even the Brits don't take the Union Jack as seriously.

Symbols can be destroyed... the spirit of a nation cannot. Which of the two should be defended until death? A piece of cloth dyed with ink, or the entire foundation of a whole society?
