Been thinking about this lately. I notice that some atheists bring up religion and stuff when no one is really discussing it. If in a setting where no one is really discussing their religion , is there a valid reason to keep trying to start a debate where the other side really has no real interest in doing so? Just confused why people feel the need to go on and on about a subject that no one is bringing up. Talking in general and not necessarily about the Internet.

But on the note of the OP, if people only spoke of what was being spoken, then wouldn't the same thing be discussed for all eternity?

i suppose they try to seek validation through camaraderie. they try to make people of faith see what is "wrong" with religion not only to re-assure themselves but to try and convert their friends, as you might know misery loves company.

or most likely, they have nothing else to talk about

My mom always told me to speak only when spoken too. We are not all silent , so no. Speaking more about a constant flood of bringing it up when no one is or when both sides are bringing it up but one side stops and the other side continues as if nothing has changed.

I wasn't assuming silence, but only the idea that people only spoke of what was being spoken. Neither side will ever be silent until all with differing opinions lay buried six feet under. Both atheism and religion are impossible to prove without divine interference. Obviously, there is some degree of logic in both arguments, otherwise, neither would exist.

It's like accusing UKIP in the UK of constantly bringing up the EU in response to problems, despite it being relevant to the given subject.

Religion has far reaching impacts, regardless of some apologists unwillingness to recognise that. It may be unrelated to you, but religion affects a lot of things.

It's quite hypocritical actually, given religion gets brought up in response to almost anything; and that doesn't seem to be getting criticised. God is the answer to everything for some people.

I see it alot on youtube sadly when people say simply ANYTHING with god even if it was nothing religious...

As for off topic, as a person who never post on religion threads, I honestly think religion topics should be banned they honestly never work well and I think they offend more people then they bring in for a debate. It just seems like theres constant christianity and muslim bashing from WHAT I HAVE SEEN in my opinion.

Eh, at times when people start hating on religion and trying to convinceothers that there is no God whatsoever, I sometimes question if they are trying to convince other people........ or themselves.

Much of it stems from insecurity. Secure people don't worry about the beliefs of others.

Sometimes it's frustration: when you've grown up as a religious man and then realise you don't believe it anymore...well at that point the religious people you grew up with won't understand you and you'll want to understand why you believed..It's on you mind.

Others are genuinely puzzled why you would believe and therefor always bring up the subject.

And others are just annoying..thinking they are superior because of it.

And a lot of them are like me...I rarely bring it up, only when I have a good reason to.

People do that with every topic imagineable. Whatever you're interested in, that's what you want to talk about, and you tend to bring it up even when no one else is interested.

But dig deeper. Why should anyone care what someone believes? There is more to the issue than the surface will show....

If you'ld believe someone's believe is wrong and holding them back, wouldn't you be inclined to try and tell them?

No. Personal decisions are just that. It's not my, or anyone else's business to enforce beliefs/opinions/ideas on others. And this goes for more than just faith decisions.....life decisions. People need to learn to mind their own business. They don't know best when it comes to personal issues. It's nothing more than arrogance.

Oh...and last I checked atheists didn't have any incontrovertible proof either. So it's a wash. Let people believe what they want.

I agree with that when it comes to real life. I never do that, in fact i rarely discussion religion irl nor do i try to enforce my views on somebody else. But come on, this is a forum, isn't this the place where everyone should state his\hers opinion? Someone opens a thread about religion, i post my opinion, someone replies and we discuss. Isn't that the purpose of an internet forum?

I'm not I saying that people should, but I know a lot of them that do, atheists and theists. But that doesn't just happen on the subject of religion, it happens with every subject. a lot of us (humans) like to give are opinions on things. Even at school we don't just learn facts, we learn ideals and opinions to.

That's why I said if you'ld believe...besides I didn't state atheists have incontrovertible proof (Or did I take that last comment to personal :p)

It's just human nature to want to impose your idea on others - some of it stems from ego I guess: "How could anyone be so wrong about this subject when I'm so right?" and some of it stems from the fear that if ideas you disagree with are allowed to go unchallenged, then they gain legitimacy. Like the old saying goes, "A lie can travel halfway round the world while the truth is putting on its shoes."

The idea of accepting that people are different and have different ideas, and they don't need to be told off because of it...that's some pretty mature, intellectual stuff that's downright foreign to the majority of people.

There is a difference between an exchange of ideas and the vilification of ideas. And the latter is what goes on here for the most. Back in the day...there were good religious discussions. Not now. Only attacks.
