To compensate for the stickiness of control pads and the low resolution of televisions, video games that involve shooting have long employed the use of automatic aiming. It's a luxury about to be enjoyed by real soldiers in the field.

Last week, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency awarded Lockheed Martin a $6.9 million contract to continue development of the company's One-Shot Program, a research project begun in 2007 that aims to develop an advanced sniper scope that is able to calculate things like crosswinds, GPS location, range to target, temperature and even humidity and almost instantly update the sights to ensure an "automatic" kill.

Spooky stuff, but also very real; Lockeed Martin will have 15 test units ready for delivery to the US military soon, with 100 more to follow if things go well.

I came in here expecting guns with homing bullets. This is just a sniper scope that automatically accounts for what snipers currently have to take into account manually. Laaaaaame. :P

That would help you kickass in any game though. Imagine knowing where to snipe in CoD or Halo if someone is running.

A good sniper doesn't need this nonsense. If this becomes mandatory and breaks down in the field, thatsolideris really screwed.

That $7M could've helped a lot in combating poverty. Instead, we get some auto aim sniper rifle. Lame.

Lol, its far more reallistic than that. In games like say cod, when you shoot, the bullets hit the target even if your croshair is off the target as long you are close and they also use a mechanic that it drags your crosshair on the target when you move the thumbstick close enough. The scope they talking about however is designed to check the wind direction and speed and the range and the bullet drop of the specifc weapon so when you aim with the scope, the bullet will actually go to the center of the crosshair which is what happens in every game with a sniper rilfe, minus bad company 2.

I was hoping for some genetic implant that allow you to lock on to your target like a magnet.

OMG post of the day right here!

Anyways, auto-aim is for NOOBS! What are they gonna do when they go to shoot an enemy but someone else runs across the crosshairs at the last second?
