A while ago I heard about this genre called Avant-Garde. But I never really cared for checking it out until now. What're some good bands to get into the genre with?

I already listen to Radiohead as It's my understanding they're part of this genre. I enjoy both rock and metal, but I'd prefere minimum harsh-vocals if possible.

If you want to get a lot of good suggestions then I'd recommended becoming a member of a music site. If you like metal then you could check out Metal Archives, they have a forum dedicated to recommendations, so you'll get a much better result there.

I think you're confused about the concept of Avant-Garde. It's pretty open to interpretation though I guess. Mostly total crap also.

I'm no expert on avant-garde music (which isn't really a genre, per se), but I don't think Radiohead qualifies.

i try not to get too silly with genres, but gorguts is a bit avante garde (on their obscura album, atleast). maudlin of the well might be more your style (dont mind the impossibly creepy fan video), although i really only like the "part the second" album. also, diablo swing orchestra is awesome.

Captain Beefheart

Silver Apples

Frank Zappa

Tom Waits

Natural Snow Buildings

Von Spar

Kid Commando

Of course, some of these fit the bill more than others, but IMO they all fit enough in at least one of those genres.

Lockedge's awesome mention of Tom Waits and Beefhart reminded me that you should check out Primus as well.

Arcturus and Vulture Industries are one of the few I like. I'm not into Avant-Garde that much.

Go to Last.fm Type in "Zeuhl" for the radio. Mostly not-metal, but if you want some really good Avant-garde/experimental... well, just check it out.

Mr. Bungle and Mike Patton's other projects.

And John Zorn if you want some jazzier stuff.

I know very few avante-guarde bands, but plenty of bands that can be perceived as experimental. Nothing of the metal variety though.

  • Dun - They've been called Zeuhl, but don't completely fit the genre. This is their only piece that I find worth listening to, but it's good enough to warrent listening to the full album a few times.
  • Birds and Buildings - They produced 1 album in 2008, and crammed almost every progressive rock sub-genre onto it. As such it's quite a varied album and the first tune builds to become absolutely excellent.

That's all I'll list for the time being.

Throbbing Gristle

Coil

Lamonte Young

And I really, really wouldn't call Radiohead experimental.

- Diablo Swing Orchestra

- Stolen Babies

Then if we're just going by bands that could be considered "experimental",

- The Prize Fighter Inferno

The horn arrangement for The National Anthem is fairly avant garde.
