Music lovers,

Have you just recently discovered music by an artist that you thought was new, but discovered that it's been around forever? Have you been reluctant to listen to a group, but when you finally did, you couldn't believe you went without their music for so long? I just discovered Arcade Fire's music, though they have almost a decades worth of music. I feel kinda ashamed.

What about you guys and gals? Did you miss out on something awesome for too long? Which band/artist and why the reluctance to give them a listen?

Well it took me until I was 15 to actually listen to the Beatles. I also got into Elliott Smith about a year ago, only to find that he started recording music in the very early '90s.

That was a fantastic episode!

Recently for me, I'd say Fela Kuti and the Talking Heads are the musicians I should have been listening to for a long time, and was just sort of oblivious to their music.

They're good. I can't get into all the songs from "The Holy Bible" but the first half is great. I guess I'll have to try Elliot Smith next.

Have you listened to their song Wheels within Wheels off of their Re-Traced ep? Pretty awesome For me I only got into metal music around 2 or 3 years ago...so most bands I listen to now have been around for a while. My favorite band, Agalloch, has been making music since around the late 90s.

Phish. I actually bought an album of theirs almost two years ago, but I wasn't crazy about it so it's just sat in my collection. About two months ago I decided to give it another chance; now I have over a hundred Phish songs, and they're one of my favorite bands.

I was aware of them, but I think I'd only heard Psycho Killer when I was in 7th grade or so, and so it just didn't click at that time. My taste has become more refined since.:P

Blood, Sweat & Tears and Streetlight Manifesto.

Really I should have know about the first one all along, but they are old and quite obscure.

Streetlight Manifesto took me forever to get into because Ska was just really weird to me, also I'm not used to heavy and fast music. Now the heaviest and fastest SM music (like on Somewhere In The Between) is my most favorite of them. lol.

Honestly, even Chicago and The Beatles fit here as well. For the longest time I only knew of "If You Leave Me Now" from Chicago, and had no idea of their early jazz rock music. And The Beatles, well I only learned to love them like three years ago, before then I really hadn't heard them much at all.

Pearl Jam. I knew about them but I hated Eddie's voice for a long time and then in 2004 or 5 something snapped and I started to love them. Agalloch is another. Generally I'm aware of bands but it takes a while for me to get into them.

"Do you have the songs?"
"Yeah, they're in my Zune in the car. I'll go get it."
"Really?"
"Nah, I'll go get my iPod."
For some reason, I though that part was hilarious. :P

It took me too long to go buy a Coheed and Cambria album. Love them now.
I keep meaning to try out Rush, but I want individual albums and HMV only has compilations 'n such.

The majority of the music I enjoy now was created before I was born. I didn't really explore music until my early twenties when I started to take my own musicianship seriously.

Pavement. Despite constantly hearing about how great they were, I kept putting off buying an album because they were so damn expensive (I could usually buy two other CDs for the same price as one Pavement album). I was such the fool.

Ive never listened to Arcade Fire, but they were just on the cover of Spin. I think I would like them, I thought they were new though. Deltron 3030 is about the only thing I can come up with. Just found him about a year ago and the CDs been out since 2000 I think. Everything else I have is fairly recent, I don't really like old music. Kings of Leon would probably be a good example too, they just got their big break, but I think they have been together for a while
