PETALING JAYA, Aug 26 African tenants at a Bandar Sri Subang condominium here have three months to vacate their units after the buildings management slapped an unprecedented occupancy ban on them last week. The decision came after the majority of Ridzuan Condominium residents voted in an annual general meeting (AGM) held on July 6 against renting their units to foreigners from the continent, whom they allege to have caused a lot of nuisance. The Malay Mail Online sighted a copy of the memo circulated to Ridzuan residents explaining the ban, which has also been making the rounds online through Facebook. We refer to the above matter without prejudice and without malice, the memo dated August 19 started. As a result of the decision held in the AGM on 6th July 2013, the majority of the residents voted in the AGM to not letting their units for rental to Africans any more. According to the memo, the presence of Africans has created a lot of nuisance and problems to the community, which in turn has driven down the property value of units there. It further asserts that owners have found it difficult to rent out or sell their units to other prospective customers due to the alleged situation. It was also resolved during the AGM that any resident who has an African tenant is to cancel the rental and to vacate them from their units within three (3) months from the date of this letter, it added.

I actually have a roommate from Africa. And yes, heinvite several others to live with us, even though they aren't under the lease. They play loud music way into the night. I've had up to 8 people sleeping on the floor/couches in a 2 bdm apt. Really it's a huge problem, especially when your buying supplies meant only for you. I don't mind sharing with one other person, but not 3-4 others. Landlord does jack **** about it too. I can see why, there is a REASON.bobaban

That's a horrible idea

Obviously it's not going to be every African doing this, but this experience has soured me and I made sure therer was no black roommates in the place I'm getting in Sept.

Congrats on the new fvcked up philosophy. Avoiding having black roommates because of one african dude is pretty messed up.

Yeah I know, I hate that I think this way. But if you went through an entire year of this when you're trying to concentrate on school it's maddening.

If a tenant (or a group of tenants) are causing a problem, sure, ban them. But banning everyone in their demographic isn't exactly going to help matters.

fortunately arguments against it tend to outweigh.

You're an ignorant racist asshole. There are plenty of wealthy black people whose very existence completely counters your point. Race doesn't have anything to do with it, social problems and poverty does.

Well i actually happen to be African (and black) and I hate loud music, I generally prefer my own company, and I dont enjoy having people over all the time. In fact more often than not, its my roommates having parties and people over, but I dont complain because I respect the right for my roommate to have people over since he is paying part of the rent, and I learned a long time ago how to ignore distracting noises and concentrate on the work at hand. Basically what I'm trying to get at is that its pretty ignorant for you to classify an entire race based on your experience with a single African person. There are good Africans just like there are bad Africans. There are good white people just as there are bad white people. Being a decent human being has nothing to do with race.

Then explain to me how my neighborhood went from being a safe working class community to being a ghetto in under a decade. I'm sure ill be called a racist here but the next city over which borders my neighborhood is still a very nice place (Grosse Pointe Woods Michigan). Same houses built in the same era and everything. The only difference is, the neighborhood is white and their police force is known for profiling. This neighborhood only changed when the local news channel and paper blew up a huge story about Racial Profiling in Harper Woods Michigan. Now I'm stuck going bankrupt on an 80k mortgage for a house that is now worth under 20k. These were not 15 to 20k houses though when the black people started moving in. Now I know there is a lot of decent and wealthy black people but unfortunatly where i live, the bad outweighs the good. And its not completely a poverty thing because these houses were very much 80k to 100k when the color started to change.

I agree with what you're saying. But it wasn't just my roommate, there were other African's as I said. In fact, my actual roommate was good, but his cousins/friends were the problem. I should also mention I went with a place that didn't have twenty-somethings like me, as they are more likely to party alot, and went with older professional people. Does that make me ageist? I'm honestly just playing the odds.

There is nothing wrong with playing the odds, but once those odds become how you view an entire race...that's when it becomes a problem. Also, about playing your odds, I can understand that. If I was some white guy, I wouldnt go strolling through some hardcore ghetto black neighborhood in the middle of the night, just like as a black guy I wouldnt go strolling through some redneck white only community in the middle of Mississipi. Sure, absolutely nothing may happen, but I aint risking it. :P And its sad that people just attribute Africa like its on country. Americans distinguish themselves based on what state their from, yet Africa, which is vastly more diverse and larger than the US is just referred to as one lump sum group. What Im trying to say that Africa has countries. Nigerians are nothing like Egyptians, yet they are both African.

There is probably a culture divide there which might be the primary reason they are seen a nuisance. In college I had several Hispanic students on my floor. They never went to bed any earlier than about 2 in the morning. They would stay up in the hallways and talk, or leave doors open. They always took siestas in the middle of the day, something I couldn't afford to do and it was irritating trying to get sleep to be ready for class in the morning. While I never would have asked for them to be kicked out of the dorm it, there very much exist cultural differences that can seem bad to other people. Still not ground to kick out people because they are different culturally.

Not to go into culture or race....but in a generic comment in regard to all people.....if someone is causing others to lose sleep....they should be told that while they can stay up as late as they wish....they have to be mindful of others and keep it quiet.

Oh they were told many times by many different people. They just couldn't understand what they were doing wrong. They were only doing what they've done their entire lives. Everyone in their hometowns did the same thing. People just couldn't explain to them why people in the U.S. didn't stay up until 2 every night.

I know when I was shopping for my house last year I found this out first hand. Nobody wants to live in a "black neighborhood" when you look at neighborhoods that are mostly black the home value goes lower and lower. Even areas that were nice a few years ago when way down in value.

Thats not right...So what about the respectful black tenants that follow the rules. They are kicked because of their skin color? Of 800 units there has to be quite a few of them. Thats bullshit

I can understand the position the owners are in, if they have dedicated themselves to honoring these tenant meeting then they are obligated to follow them. However, I would suggest that the entire complex, tenants and owners included, make the far wiser decision to only kick out the problematic individuals instead of forbidding an entire continental ethnic group from being able to live there. It's an extremely narrow-minded solution to this problem. At the very least, I hope people in whatever country this is at least have the right to sue for discrimination.
