Which bands at their start made you interested in their music and then let you down?

U2 gets much criticism here. Some deservedly so....some not. At the start of U2's career they were very much a creative talented band. Somewhere along the way the fame became the driving force instead of the music and as such they chased every shift in music trying to stay relevant. The went from alternative to adult alternative now. Yes...they can still write a good catchy song. But overall their music is uninteresting and boring. This saddens me as they had such promise in the 80's.

One other band that peaked with the first album is Pearl Jam. Though PJ is still one of my favorite bands...they haven't duplicated Ten. Still Black is a must have song for anyone's MP3 player. If you don't have it on yours.....I recommend you get it.

Anyway....which bands disappoint you and why?

I've never been more disappointed than when Sugar Ray became queer They had two awesome albums, and then just became this poppy crap band. I guess I should have known when "Fly" was their most popular song on that one CD, they would sell out.

There are tons, but I will stick to recent memory: 1. AFI 2. Breaking Benjamin (sucked after 2nd cd) 3. Chevelle 4. Disturbed (sucked after 1st cd) 5. Evans Blue 6. Five Finger Death Punch 7. Smile Empty Soul 8. Soil 9. Three Days Grace All the bands listed, unless otherwise listed, released utter crap albums this year. -I used to like all of them BTW- My theory is that all of these bands put so much emotion, hate, and angst into their albums at the start of the careers. That is easy to have when you are a struggling musician and mad at the world. It is hard to maintain when you are a successful, wealthy musician...hate to hate when life is great That or some have just gone for the money grab Needless to say, this year is so full of disappoint

True in some cases, but you can just "feel" the lack of emotion in others (emotion that was present in previous entries)...if that makes any sense -does that mean that they got "fat and happy", so to speak -or does it mean they went for a money grab...don't have the answer

Probably the same issue as U2 had. Rather make comfortable music so as to stay in the public eye.

Scorpions. Easily.

Their albums as late as 1990's "Crazy World" ranged, imo, from decent to amazing.

From 1993 and onwards their albums were complete let-downs, a bunch of mediocre songs of no substance. A fortunate "break" from this situation was 2004's "Unbreakable" but they decided to become unineteresting again with 2007's "Humanity: Hour 1". Way to go Scorps. >___>

No love for their 80's work? That's mostly what I'm familiar with in regard to the Scorpions.

Well their 80's work are included in the their albums before Crazy World (1990) which I like. Its from 1990 onward that they started going downhill.

So basically.....:

1972 - 1990 = Great

1993 - now = Disappointment (with the exception of Acoustica (which is not a studio album so it doesnt really count) and Unbreakable)

I like PJ's stuff after Ten. Every band is going to have that album that is their peak, for some it is their first and IMO often it has more to do with their sound and the time they exist in rather than their own work. I'm not disappointed unless they come out with garbage. I get mildly disappointed with most bands in general though. You get one album, and the rest just follow almost predictably. I don't blame them for making a buck, I'd like to do that too, but man... so few attempts to try new stuff.

Them Crooked Vultures right now. IMO, Josh Homme ruined it with his unclear vocals. You can't understand a word he is saying in most of the songs.

Nickel Back. The repetitive tracks only changed by lyrics is soo annoying, that I stopped listening to my favorite station after they kept playing there songs ALL THE TIME.

Don't laugh but I liked Green Day, All-American Rejects, and even Fall Out Boy *gasp* Green Day had some decent older music and at the time I loved American Idiot, but thier new album is crap and I now I realize they get much more attention than they deserve, which I guess goes for most bands that appear on MTV nowadays...

Weezer. Their debut was amazing. The blue album was amazing. Then they just got slowly worse and worse until 'Make Believe' which, as one reviewer put it, was 'so bad it effectively cancels out the excellence of Pinkerton and the Blue album'. Then they release the Red album, and get everyones hopes up that they might be starting to get their act together. ....only to then release "Raditude", which features collaborations with Lil Wayne and other general awfulness.

I'd probably go with Saxon. The first song I heard by them was Killing Ground, which I thought was pretty godly. The singer wasn't too bad;a little high, but he still sounded decent for metal, and the guitar more than made up for it. Then I go look up some of their other stuff...the singer sounds like that guy from Journey,. D= These guys are supposed to be metal, and I'm not a fan of Journey's singer at ALL, so I was a little more than disappointed...D=

Jimmy Eat World. But not quite in the sense sought in this thread.
I heard their song "Just Tonight..." years ago and I absolutely loved it and still do.

The once now I decided to check out more of their stuff only to realize they're the kind of a soft-emo-rock band. Gah..

That single song is one of my all time favourites but the rest of the band was rather disappointing.

While I do agree that Pearl Jam Ten hasn't been re-created, and probably never will, I feel like Pearl Jam can still put out good music. Backspacer was awesome IMO.

Couldn't disagree more, I wasn't a huge fan of Homme before TCV but i think it really suites the music.

To stay on topic: I was quite disapointed with Muse's album this year, although they redeemed themselves somewhat when I went to see them live.

Their lead singer left for Drowning Pool, so they got someone else. It's understandable they wouldn't be as good.

Well Futures was a great album.

Anyway, my vote goes to Linkin Park. They were great with Hybrid Theory and Meteora, but changed their sound and totally turned me off to them.

Metallica (after AJFA), AC/DC (after FTATR, though BI and TRE were decent), in a way Black Sabbath (after Mob Rules their music, though still pretty good, is for the most part nowhere near as good)

Their 1st 2 albums were good, just this last one that sucked so bad.
They were excellent when I saw them live as well...but they had not blown up yet...performed before about 100 people in a bar in Lubbock, Texas

I was so excited when I heard Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlain would be teaming up with Paz Lenchantin and David Pajo to form a supergroup. What went wrong was that Zwan turmed out to be crap. I never quite worked out whether the Christian rock angle was tongue in cheek, but if it was, the irony went over my head. I'm still reeling from that one.

AC/DC was the first that came to mind. After Back in Black, nothing really could compare to it. They had some good albums after, like Black Ice, but it just didn't stack up. Still a great band, just disappointed that they sort of fizzled out. The Bags also disappointed me, but in a different way. I love Sharpen Your Sticks, but the other albums I've heard, just aren't that good.

I don't think every song sounds the same at all. Who cares if the lyrics aren't satanic? Chugging out the same "I hate god" lyrics gets stale anyway.

You must like the softer Breaking Benjamin stuff. -their first 2 albums are a lot more "hardcore", the next 2 are a lot softer One X is a great album -it is their second one -Life starts now is the most recent one that sucked (came out this year)

The Human Abstract: They put out an AMAZING debute with Nocturne, but then it comes out their incredible guitarist, AJ Minette, is leaving as he simply does not want to play metal anymore. Their follow-up, Midheaven, was then just a big dissapointment.

Drowning Pool: This one is understandable. They debuted with Sinner which was great, but then their singer Dave Williams died and it has become apparent that Williams was what made that band. He was a great vocalist and it seems he was also responsible for their nu-metal sound which they ditched after he was gone.

Earshot: Their first two albums are great all-the-way through. Their latest however only had a couple songs that caught my attention.

[QUOTE="jaydough"] The Mars Volta.
All of their albums (even Amputechture) were 10/10s, but Octahedron was a 9/10.

OMER BETRAYED US BRING BACK JON ROBBLE ROBBLE ROBBLE.

You consider a 9/10 album to be a disappointment?

Smashing Pumpkins - First 3 albums were all incredible, but not a huge fan of much after that. a couple of songs from Adore were good though.

Don't laugh but I liked Green Day, All-American Rejects, and even Fall Out Boy *gasp* Green Day had some decent older music and at the time I loved American Idiot, but thier new album is crap and I now I realize they get much more attention than they deserve, which I guess goes for most bands that appear on MTV nowadays...SoNin360
Actually, 21st Century Breakdown is Green Day's best work.

agreed. I couldn't stand their stuff in the 90's, but their last two albums were suprisingly not bad.
