The decline in Barack Obama's popularity since July has been the steepest of any president at the same stage of his first term for more than 50 years.

This was expected, especially when you campaign on the platform of hope and change and deliver nothing but the same old washington garbage. Obama had a goldern oppurtunity, like Bush did after 9/11, to rennoouce American Imperialism, but he did not. Obama wants to push for healthcare reform, but everyting is in gridlock because of costs. Why not cut military spending? It's such a simple question.

Obama had the clout to do it early in his presidency to tell Americans that they can no longer spend money on its empire and "peace keeping". He should've told Americans Bush was right that Osama's fighters do hate US freedom, it's freedom to do whatever it wants in the international stage with no regard for anyone else.

No, people simply expected we'd be out of the recession by now because people are impatient and Obama had huge hype. His own cabinet is blocking a lot of the bills they're trying to pass, and it seems that while everyone supported public healthcare during election talks, somehow that all switched around and folks are angry that they'd have the be taxed more(oh the horror *rolls eyes*) He's trying to ease out of Iraq, but he's also infusing support into Afghanistan where it's needed (but sadly, where also it will be useless as Afghanistan's government is corrupt and too many Afghan people are jaded). I'm all for cutting military spending and having a faster ease-out process for the middle-east, but I'd be a bit worried about the hypocrites who both wail at western presence there and who would jump to criticize them for leaving the country in ruins.

As bad as I think he is, a large part of it is because when he first started his rating was wildly inflated by all that "hope" and "change" BS. If he had started where most do, there wouldn't have been such a drop.

I compare Obama to a student running for student president. Obama essentially promised no more homework and icecream sandwiches for lunch and for whatever reason, voters believed him.

Well that's not surprising he's dropped the most, he had one of the highest inaugural approval rating of a President in living memory.

So he has the furthest to drop as the honeymoon period evaporates.

According to Gallup he has the same approval rating as Nixon did at this point in his presidency, is higher than Reagan, Clinton and Bush Snr, and is two points behind Carter and Bush Jnr.

Also, more people are connected to the internet and media and are better equiped to be tuned into the politics going on it Washington, so Obama's rating is partly a function of the fact that people are able to disapprove of him in the first place.

so true. voters believing him was the scariest thing of all. i totally would have voted for a student class president that promised no more homework and ice cream sandwiches for lunch when i was in high school. man! i'm a lot smarter now! college worked! hooray!

That's because people had too high expectations. They expected Obama to fix everything in his first 100 days. He made too many promises, yes, but people just rushed in with blind hope, and declared that he would solve all of America's problems as soon as he was elected. No recent President has had such high hopes upon him.

I blame the voters much more than Obama. Did they expect gold dust to fall from the sky after his inauguration speech? It's not like he changed his stated policies after he was elected.

I'm not trying to defend him or anything, but he was disgustingly overhyped during the presidential race so I'm sure that had the most to do with the poll. I knew this would happen and he would accomplish very little, if at all in his first year in office. I still stand by my prediction that he won't be reelected for a second term.

I think it also had to do with historically low disatisfaction levels with his predecessor. I don't think it's a coincidence you have a President leaving office with one of the lowest approval rating ever, and have a President from the opposing party enter the office with one of the highest approval ratings ever.

Yeah, definitely has something to do with it as well, which is really understandable. Hype killed him really.

So its kinda like when he was awarded the Nobel peace prize for not being President Bush.

I think he has done a extremely good job in mobilizing everything.. What he has done on capital is lightening fast to what you usually get.. Though I do disagree with staying in both Iraq and Afghanistan. But in all honesty I wouldn't put public opinion very high.. Look at the Bush adminstration, he recieved extremely high positive public opinion right after 9/11 even when his policies were not neccesarly effective.. Public opinion is reactive, and to be frank alot of times stupid.. Who have the narrow sighted view or "no in my backyard" view.. That being said I think Obama is living up to the hype, the problems he is having is the fact he has to deal with the congress.. Not all democrats agree with their plan.

The problem is people expect a change to happen within one year of his presidency when he plainly mention in his speeches before he became a president that it won't be happening anytime soon. I like how the man hasn't been even been in the office for a complete year and people are starting to hate him....

The main problem is that people expected problems to be fixed right away. People are impatient. I expect that probably a third of his promises will come to truth, but he is trying to much all at once. His plans, while I agree with, need a 25-35 year window to be accomplished not the 8 years I think he will have.

I think the reason why he's trying to do too much is because of the expectations people put on his shoulders. With so much expectations, people tend to try and do too many things. I just hope none of them comes back to haunt Obama....

i was scared Obama would change too much. but he turned out to be a coward for the most part, afraid to make big decisions. Republicans have a good argument next election for why we need someone with executive experience.

A president who makes no changes is still a better president than one who makes bad changes. Hence the reason I will never vote for a republican president.

The western world tends to expect their elected Officials to do everything for them and when they don't get instant gratification they claim it's the leaders fault. Yes sometimes it is but a recession doesn't just go away, the public needs to help out toward that to by actually buying things as if there was never a recession in the first place. As for the health care he promised when he was getting elected he tried pretty hard for that and you knew he would but he was shot down by the republicans because change is bad.

Because we're fighting two wars, (soon to be one), and because of our superior military, we're not going to take threats from countries like North Korea or Iran. WE'RE the ones making threats, and we have to back it up if all other ways fail.
