Cant say really, they both take skill, it depends on the music, A lot of todays mainstream music have really simple bass lines, but A lot of metal is pretty tough to play, Blues/Jazzy stuff is the hardest really, Check out Victor Wooten on youtube, Thats someone who has Mastered the bass.

I'm learning it now. I need to find a teacher though after I get some more cask. Books, websites, and youtube can only take you so far.

I mainly play guitar but I also play bass. Really fun instrument, a lot easier than guitar though.

The pain with bass players is that for some reason many bands (especialy hard rock, metal) seem have a grudge against bass guitars so all you hear is the wall of electric guitar distorsion, realy loud drums and if your unlucky, a very mediocre singer that tops evreything off... While the bass is barely audiable unless you realy put your ears into it. But one thing i noticed is that chicks dig bass players haha :)

From what I've seen it's been:

Singer

Guitarist

Drummer

Random guy in the crowd

The creepy guy standing outside

Bassist

I guess it's down to the bassist, but round here bassists are quite the popular bunch...
