I'm an athiest but I'm in a Catholic school for over 7 years and sometimes I thought of God, it somehow seem comforting to me, don't know why. When I imagine God exists, it always make me happy knowing my world is in control. So confused whether believe in it or not, since I already had a great understanding of evolution and knowing God does not exists. Any advice OT? I know where this is going.

God is just a name for the reasons why things happen. You can say physics and stuff is why things happen or use the name god and simplify it that way.

A lot of people will try to make it look pointless and pathetic but you get to decide. I believe in God and that does not devalue me in anyway. If you eventually made up your mind and believed in God then more power for you.

Evolution doesn't disprove the existance of God. It might contradict some of the claims in religious texts, if you read them literally rather than as fable, but it doesn't disprove God. Nothing can. Neither can the existance of God be proven. So believe in God if it floats your boat. If not, then don't worry about it.

Of course it's going to be comforting. If I professed that when you die you go into a state of constant orgasm, it would be comforting. Just because something can hypothetically be comforting doesn't mean it is valid. Ignorance is bliss.

Belief that there is a good God who guides the creation in such a way that all things, whether good or bad, will eventually work together for good is indeed a comfort. "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28 ).

However, if one believes in God then much more comes than simple comfort. If one believes that the God of Scripture is indeed true then our lives should be radically different. There comes a conviction for those who do not know God, a conviction of sin, a realization that earthy possessions are insignificant to the eternal things of God, a need and call to love others, etc. etc.

I don't really see what evolution has to do with anything, since many people believe in both God and evolution. Plus you can't "know" whether God exists or not. As for whether to believe or not, follow your heart. Don't be overly concerned with "proof", some things just can't be proven either way, you have to accept that you can't know or understand everything, sometimes in life you just gotta trust.

[QUOTE="lamprey263"]believing in Santa was comforting... until our local Santa went to jail for molesting children at his free at-home daycare center where he played Santa year round, his name was Ronald McDonald (no joke) anyhow, how is believing in God comforting, I mean if you believe in the Bible then you know God is bipolar, he smites people all the time, loving him is like Stockholm syndrome more than legitimate affection for your creator

Actually, I believe in God because I found the arguments for the existence of God convincing.

Particularly arguments from philosophers such as , Aristotle, Plotinus, Anselm, Aquinas, Augustine, Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Kant, Hegel, Locke, Hume, Godel, Plato, andPlatinga.

Believing in God was comforting until he seemed like a bully figure when I got older. Christianity is "suppose" to be a peaceful religion yet caused/causes all these problems in the world. And when people say some Christians are good people -_-, Some Buddhists are good people, Some Atheists are good people , Some Hindus are good people .....ect.

Just out of interest, could you summarize one or two of those arguments? I'm not trying to start a 10-page debate, I'm just curious as to whether or not any logical arguments for religion exist.

Well - people believe in God for many different reasons. I believe due to the many experiences I have had in my life. I also believe with all my heart that God does exist. The more I study (not only the scriptures, but many different things), the more I believe in God and Jesus Christ. My mind has become much more open ever since I decided to get baptized.

I'm sure there are people out there who believe because of the comfort and, I admit, there were times I have been comforted. My parents have also comforted me at times when I was growing up and I became sick. Comfort can come from a variety of sources.

God = life after death

No God = rotting in the ground

Even though the latter is more probable, of course the idea of never really losing the person you are is very comforting, if a bit naive.

I dont see how the idea of a god is truly comforting. to me, it would be quite disconcerting if a divine being existed, considering he/she has done nothing to prevent the massive human suffering over the past few millennium. This is certainly not a loving creator and certainly not one I would trust.

I don't really believe in God either, but I sort of view humanity as god, sort of lol, and for the most part its extremely comforting because 95% of my interactions with people are good, comforting, and reassuring. That is enough for me.

Many people think that religion is just a form of "comfort." Just so people know that after they die they aren't dead. It seems silly that this is their reason for being atheist and what not, if it comforts you and if there is a chance that there is life after death, why not give it a chance and try to believe. Because if there really is another life don't you want to be a part of it? I still don't know what I believe, but i'm as optimistic as I can be when it comes to religion and i'd sure like to live on after I die.

Actually, this creates more problems rather than solutions:

  1. Which interpertation of god is correct?
  2. Which religion is correct?

I wasn't saying as a "backup plan" but give it a chance. And if you're mind is changed then follow it full on but if not, go back to your beliefs.
