Same here, the TV show was forgettable but the movie was really something special.

AMEN
Lets not forget this masterpiece
I'd say Princess Mononoke... or perhaps Spirited Away.
SA was the first ghibli film i saw; to me it seemed as though not much happened in it (although thinking about it it probably did). The big headed witch totally weirded me out at first, but there was something strangely compelling about it all. I was amazed at the quality of animation, and i was just absorbed into the rich world that had been created. It brought me into the Ghibli world, and just really opened me eyes to just how awesome anime can be.
So i guess Spirited Away gets my award.
Haven't seen many animated films, though I do know of quite a few. I loved Ghost in the Shell..which was probably my first exposure to anime.
As a Type-Moon fan, I must say the Kara no Kyoukai film adaptation looks extremely promising. Beautiful animation and presentation. I'm already familiar with the source material, which can only be described as "poetic" at times. Nasu Kinoko is a brilliant writer.
I've already been hearing alot of good things about the first chapter (it's a 7-part animated film series.) The anticipation is killing me.

Too bad the character animation look so typical. I hate that ... but then it wouldn't be anime? I don't know.
The Iron Giant. I still have yet to see a movie that balances being kid friendly and offering up a nice message without beating the audience to death with it (hi, Princess Mononoke). It also does so while remaining deceptively simple.
And it's one of the few animated movies that makes me feel like a kid again when I watch it.
The Lion King is also excellent.

It's good, but it's completely different from the book that it's based on.

Unfortunately, it's going to be a while. It's only showing at a single theater at the moment in Shinjyuku, Japan. Two of the seven chapters have been shown so far.
The first chapter makes it to DVD on the 22nd of next month (if I remember correctly.) There's no telling how long it'll be before it's licensed in North America, so I'm hoping a fansub group picks up the project quickly. Preferably a group familiar with Nasu's works.

Eh? The animation is beautiful, as with most high production value animated film adaptations.
Or do you mean the art style? Yeah, it's pretty typical of anime..but I love the character designs. Shiki especially (the knife-wielding, kimono-clad girl.)

Yeah the art style. It's all too typical, what's up with that? Ah well, it will still be a good movie I'm sure.

What's the story? I don't dare to consult Wiki, because they have already spoiled too much in the past.
