I couldnt finish Animal Farm. The only book I actually couldnt finish. I got too annoyed at how the pig took control of things...maybe its just how I dont think communism works. Either way, its gathering dust with a bookmark 3/4 of the way in :P

Have you read "Coming Up For Air" or "Burmese Days?"

I find both of those works to be superior to the overrated "1984."

i meant Joyce if Shakespeare is a dramatist and Chaucer is a poet.  and we're strictly talking novelists.

Does genre matter?

Insofar as diction, syntax, insight and general inspiration, I am partial to C.S. Lewis.

I would say he was one of the most influential English writers of the 20th century.

Eh, I guess it's a very well written book. But it really isn't my type of book:). I found it to be too slow.

It probably also had a lot to do with the way we were taught it (read it in high school). Our teacher managed to talk for minutes about each sentence. She REALLY picked the novel apart.

They are excellent novels. I really find it hard to believe that they have been overlooked for 1984 and Animal Farm. Coming Up For Air is a little slow moving but his writing (if you enjoy it) does make up for it. Burmese Days stands out right now as my most favourite novel that I have ever read. The setting, the characters, the plot... everything is so memorable and a lot better presented than 1984. His descriptions of every part are quite vivid... not Tolkien vivid, but amazing. The whole message of the novel seems a lot less... hmm... "negative." But if I go into it any further, I would just spoil it. So I will not... but get Burmese Days first... ;)

For all I know, it could be a horrible novel and my tastes are incredibly wrong... but I doubt it. :)
