I ask this because I'm looking for a good horror to watch, I'm looking at The Shining quality of both acting and violence, and yeah, spooks... I would go

I would prefer a wide variety of suggestions... if possible, and I may see some films i've never heard about!

I don't know. I don't feel like watching 100 years worth of horror movies and then trying to decide which one I liked best.

I have a particular affinity to the original "The Thing," largely because it's difficult to know who to trust.

agreed,i didn't vote the thing because to me it's more of a sci-fi than a horror flick.

Yeah, but John Carpenter's The Thing stayed more true to the novel from my understanding. Also it has Keith David and Kurt Russell in it.

Century..that's a tough one. I'll assume you don't just mean year 2000 and up. I'll just go with Psycho cause it is the horror movie.

A horror movie journey back through time:

Se7en ( 1995 )
Silence Of The Lambs ( 1991 )
John Carpenter's The Thing ( 1982 )
An American Werewolf In London ( 1981 )
The Changeling ( 1980 - starring George C. Scott)
The Shining ( 1980 )
Alien ( 1979 )
Halloween ( 1978 )
Magic ( 1978 )
Eraserhead ( 1977 - for unsettling weirdness )
The Omen ( 1976 )
Jaws ( 1975 )
The Wicker Man ( 1973 - starring Edward Woodward )
Legend Of Hell House (1973 )
The Exorcist ( 1973 )
Don't Look Now ( 1973 )
The Devil Rides Out ( 1968 )
Rosemary's Baby ( 1968 )
The Haunting ( 1963 )
Psycho ( 1960 )
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers ( 1956 )
Cat People ( 1942 )
Nosferatu ( 1922 - silent )

These are some of the best written and acted horror movies, in my experience.

Other possibilities:

The Mist ( 2007 - very powerful ending )
The Sixth Sense ( 1999 )
Village Of The Damned ( 1960 )

Halloween is a great one. I've never watched The Shining, though I've heard it's excellent. Guess I should go watch it soon.

Hmmm. Well, I enjoyed the new "The Thing," although it paled compared to Carpenter's version. "The Skeleton Key," was kind of interesting. Oh, Pandorum was surprisingly good, although it was more sci-fi. I also really liked, "Don't be Afraid of the Dark," which has kind of a Lovecraft feel to it (technically one of the spin-offs - it might be Derleth, but I find it hard to keep them straight). I've heard Pan's Labrinth referred to as a horror flick, but, while it's really good, that's pushing the genre boundaries far too much for me.

There are a lot of low cards in the horror genre as well as some hidden gems. I recommend being adventurous.

Already seen The Thing recent version. I'll check some trailers for the others. I'v heard of the Pan's Labyrinth before, it's a Guilherme Del Toro movie right? I heard some good things about it.

Correct. As I said, calling it a horror movie is a pretty big stretch, but it's easily the best of the ones I named.

Don't be Afraid of the Dark was written by Guillermo del Toro as well (although not directed by him).

depends on what a horror film is..is it the Shining? or is it Halloween?..Phsyco? or Blairwhich Project?..Its like asking what is your favorite video game..its impossible to say really cause in the back of your mind you're always thinking.."well yea but this one is good too"..lol..

None of these is a horror movie. All three of them are psychological thrillers.

I'm liking the look of The Thing (1982), which I will be taking a look at as Kurt Russel stars (watched Death Proof the other day) and the lists will help, I couldn't help but be pulled into to the Don't Look Now picture, looks quite eery, but brilliant suggestions guys, got some work to do looking through the storylines of the ones I have yet to see, yes, I am that desperate to watch a horror....
