I'm in the market for buying a laptop

I don't know which company is the best for laptops. I wanted an apple at first, but it can't use most of the programs I use daily.

I've heard from many sites that Dell is pretty good..

When I used to sell PCs at Circuit City I always recommended Toshibas since they were affordable and more reliable than the other brands. At least with my store's experience they were the more reliable brand.

Acer...jointed

Lies! We had so much trouble with the Acer brand when I worked retail. Terrible. Maybe they've gotten better in the past year but.. ugh I will never buy one of these.

apple. what programs won't you be able to use?maximusmmii

Well winrar, and..torrents :)

I know apple can use torrents but I heard it doesn't use them well.

I'll be using the laptop mainly for video/photo editing (I know Apples are good for that)

I'm kind of leaning towards a Dell.

That works just like Winrar for Macs?

What about torrents? :?

I used to use Winrar and now I use Stuffit. I'm not sure what you'd want it to do, but I just use it for extracting files from .rar things. As for torrents, I'm sure you can use programs like Bittorrent etc on OS X.

if you're between a dell or apple.. go for the macbook. trust me. i switched about 5 months ago and i don't regret it. cool looking (os and laptop - they feel different than other laptops.. ull see what i mean), very unlikely to catch a virus, you can install windows on it, runs great and it has some great programs. dell laptops are good but if you're willing to dish out money for a mac then go for it.

I have a Toshiba and a Compaq (which is owned by HP).

But as I said in my first post, I worked retail for almost 2 years. We rarely had problems with Toshibas and Sonys and Toshibas are priced to be affordable (unlike Sony).

I've also dealt with their customer service and Dell's. Dell's wasn't bad when I dealt with them but they gave a friend of mine the run-around for almost 3 hours regarding warranty service.

I'd say go with Toshiba, but if you are looking for a cheap short-term laptop Dell may not be a bad choice. I know nothing about Apple laptops so I cannot help you there.

The only thing that holds me back on the Apple is that it can't use a lot of programs..

the once great Alienware company now is just an overrated brand name. They're way too expensive for what you get. Get an apple and put windows onto it:|

right now, Toshiba is the best computer if your looking at quality/price ratio.

Dont get a mac. Instead, you should stick with windows as that is what 85-90% of the world uses. And besides, i dont know why macs are so good for photo, music, editing or whatever. My freind has a mac, and i can do anything he does.

Do i have anything against macs? No, of course not. But i do think mac fanboys are funny because they act like the mac is SO much better then windows, when in reality if anyone is better, it would be windows. Anyways, if you are looking for best laptop companies, definetly go with Toshiba

Windows Live Messenger..Many Torrent programs..

I'm talking to a friend of mine on MSN right now who is on a Mac. However, I'd never get a Mac myself, as all my games wouldn't work on it. If you're after a laptop though (not designed for gaming anyway), I'd still never get a Mac, as for the price you're paying for a Macbook, you can get something a lot more powerful (and personally, just as sleek looking) by someone by, say, HP or Toshiba, hell even Sony!

Dell is about as bad as it gets right now in terms of reliability. I'd say Apple, Asus (eeepc would be a nice 2nd computer), or Lenovo. Apple and Lenovo are the top ranked notebook makers in consumer surveys. Dell and HP end up at the bottom this year according to 60,000 people:

also, apple airport beats the crap out of whatever wifi card my dell laptop came with. in my experience, airport offers a rock solid connection, while my dell's connection would fail constantly for seemingly no reason.

Everyone here who has mentioned acer has said they are rubbish. Wrong answer. I have had 3 acer laptops over the last 3 years and I still use 2 of them now. fairly good spec, good screens and i have never had one go wrong.
