Iron Maiden is the greatest band of any genre ever.
Honorable mentions go to Megadeth, Bathory, Nevermore, and Queensryche.

The grim and frostbitten sons of northern darkness who hail from Blashyrkh. (only an Immortal fan would get those references)
this thread fails pretty hard so far minus dracula and bloodaxe's posts. the OP dosnt even know what metal is besides devin townshend. some good metal bands off the top of my head at 1 am : thrash : megadeth , coroner, sepultura, sodom, kreator, slayer black metal : immortal, emperor, darkthrone, enslaved, dissection, ulver, mayhem, absu, burzum death metal : morbid angel, nile, cannibal corpse , behemoth, death heavy / classic metal : judas priest / black sabbath / iron maiden / rainbow / motorhead doom : electric wizard, candlemassnimatoad2000
The other bands I mentioned arent metal? Also Cannibal corpse? I cant take them seriously, their lyrics are ridiculous and that kind of vocals just irritate me.

if you get past the vocals, the music behind them is very good. the lyrics are funny. i used to hate the vocals, now i neither like or hate them, they are just there. i dont really listen to CC much , but after seeing them live and watching a behind the latest album documentary ( watching them make the songs and seeing how technical they are) , i have a newfound respect for them.the OP dosnt even know what metal is besides devin townshend.nimatoad2000LEAVE FILM-GUY ALONE!!1
Anyway, my choices for current metal bands are Anaal Nathrakh, Destroyer 666, Gorguts, Sculptured (hoping for another album), Phalanx, The Amenta, Cynic, Canopy and anything Dan Swano touches.
My favorite metal band of all time is Black Sabbath (with Ozzy).
As far as bands that are still making albums, I'll just throw in Megadeth, Mastodon, Meshuggah and Opeth...not necessarily the best bands. I just personally like their music, out of metal bands that are still writing and recording new material.

God you are annoying nimatoad, but at least you have good taste in music ...
I will have to add Fear Factory (one of my favorites), Slayer, Soulfly, Pantera, Dimmu Borgir, Lamb of God, Machine Head, Suicidal Tendencies (yeah I know they are half "punk" but they always gave that metal vibe), Anthrax, Kataklysm, Amon Amoth, Cradle of Filth ... I'll stop there

who is this god you speak of? those bands you listed are prety bad btw, i already listed slayer, and the only decent bands you mentioned were amon amarth, and dimmu borgir, both of witch i dont personally care for.By the way Film-Guy, have you listened to The Incident yet?
I just finished the title track. 55 minutes of awesome, but like any other long song it is going to take several listens to properly deconstruct it all.

Its out already:o I thought it came out on the 15th, well on amazon at least. I thought stores didnt get it until the 17th or later.

I got myself a copy earlier today and I just finished it. Fantastic stuff. The seperate 4 stracks do not disappoint at all nor exhaust you after the title track.

JB Hi Fi, entertainment store here in Australia. I thought it wasn't going to be out till the 15th, but appears that they got it the same day Germany got it so when I went in there was one lone copy and I snatched it rather quickly. If it wasnt for a random look at one of their catalogues 20 minutes prior I would not have it.

How is it compared to their last couple of albums? Is it better than In Absentia?

It's hard to tell at this point in time with only a single listen. I might rate it higher than Deadwing, definately above FOABP based on first impressions. At times its almost like Stupid Dream crossed with Deadwing, but totally unique and different at the same time. When I listened to some clips for the first time I was a bit skeptical, but it really came through.
imo it doesn't have anything on In Absentia, but that was because that was the first album I ever listened too :P

Me too. :x
that albums been leaked for a week, why are you guys all drooling over him having it?nimatoad2000
Because having illegal audio files is no where near the same thing as actually having an album. :|
it will be a while before i consider cynic to no longer be "around", since it took forever for them to follow up focus.
blotted science havent given any word (that i know of) of a new album, but they havent said anything to dismiss it either. the material on machinations of dementia was so good that it doesnt matter anyway.
gordian knot mixes in metal elements, though you could say they lean more on the rock side. no word on a new album though.
atheist. new album coming sometime this year. not much else needs to be said
there are more good ones, but those are among the best

That's the extent of the metal in your list. The rest aren't really metal at all, nor do they exhibit any real metal elements. At most they'd be "hard rock." I don't like Pain Of Salvation either. Their vocalist uses effects. That alone is a huge turnoff unless it's done extremely well and tastefully, and there it's not.Pain of Salvation, Devin Townsend

that albums been leaked for a week, why are you guys all drooling over him having it?nimatoad2000I think leaks are only good if you can get them a month or two in advance. Plus 320kbps mp3's aren't nearly as good as having the album itself. Any hardcore fan would buy the album, but if they were just a casual fan I can definitely see the appeal of downloading instead (which is what I do for a lot of bands) I'm waiting for Belphegor's new album in October...it will be incredible! :P

The bands I mentioned are mostly progressive metal, I can see why dear hunter isnt metal but what real metal elements do the bands on my list lack?

The metalheads around heregenerally don't count anything really heavy as proper metal.

No, that's just the definition of metal, metal must be heavy to be metal. Oh and Deer Hunter isn't metal, sounded like regular rock to me.[QUOTE="bangell99"]

Oh and Deer Hunter isn't metal, sounded like regular rock to me.Yeah I can understand them not being metal, but I think the others count. They are generally called progressive metal, which has the word metal in it so I assume it is metal.
Well I replaced Dear Hunter with Katatonia since dear hunter are not really metal. Also metal bands can have mellow songs too, didnt Opeth make an album that didnt have their usual growling lyrics? I cant remember what it was called, but it was more mellow than their other stuff.
