J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr
Dude rocked when dinosaur played in the 80s, and wrote probably the best reunion album ever.

No... he's not.... he's pretty much a regular guitarist....
Says the guy who's pick is Tom Morello

I love Syn's style. I don't get it when people say he sucks and has no talent... I know he's not the best, but he does have a lot talent and he's only 26 years old. Just look at all the awards the guy won last year. He's still my favorite guitarist today and I think he's amazing.

Yea. Tom Morello brings something new to guitar playing, his tricks with the toggle switches, whammy bar, the cord (Not chords, the actual CORD), and more.
What does Syn do?
Copy Dimebag's divebombs.

synster gates is good, he has a fairly average style, but it is pretty good. But yeah it is very similar to Dimebag... but at the same time all guitar players are influenced by someone

but tom is better, with his strange sounds.... But bucket head does the same thing as he does ( but i do like Rage against the machine.)
John Petrucci and Yngwie fall under the category 'older guys who are still alive'. Besides, Yngwie's not that good. Anyone who plays long enough can play as fast and as clean. I have a friend (who's only 20) who can play Icarus Fanfare without a hitch. Tons of tech death metal guitarists can do neo-Barochian phrases just as good, and he doesn't hold a candle to John Maa.
crucifine
the problem is a lot of tech death is pretty generic, and they play just for the sake of being complex. either way, in general there are some crazy talented guitarists in the tech death genre (Gorguts and Anata are the best imo, but there are tons more)
Thom Serak is a really good modern guitarist. he's definitely not the best, but for the specific genre hes up there. he's one of my favorites, even if hes not the 'best'.
I really don't understand some people's definition of the "best". To me, the best would be the one that sounds the best musically, not technically. I know it's really hard to pull of 32 notes a second, but honestly, that's not music, that's showing off. To me, the best guitarists are people like Andy McKee, Adam Jones, Carlos Santana, or as some have mentioned, Tom Morello.
But whatever, to each his own, i guess.
