Depends on what type of foot you have. My advice is go to a local running store and have them check out your walking/jogging style, from there they will set you up with a good shoe. If you just want to pick a running shoe without going to a store check out the Asic's Gel Cumulus 11 (what I wear) or a something like Nike's Lunarglide/Lunaracer.

Yeah, most specialty running stores will analyze how you walk/run and set you up with a shoe that fits your feet well. I guess I'm just reverberating what simosays said, but I run in Brooks Adrenaline GTS 10's and I love them!

Any cheap but durable running shoe will do, as long as it has a comfortable fit (which can be said about any shoe or boot purchase) There is no scientific data to support why a pair of 20$ sports would be worse than a pair of 400$ shoes designed for professional athletes, so you go right ahead and pick whatever fits the above mentioned criterias. :)

I have a 5 year old pair of new balance I use for all my excercises including running and biking. Haven't let me down yet and very comfortable.

I run 5 miles, 3 to 5 times a week and the best shoe i've had are the Nike Air Pegasus. Light, comfortable, durable (I mainly run on concrete), great support. It was hard for me to find runners with good support cause I have big and wide feet. Your best bet is to try different ones out at stores but as far as what I would recommend, the Nike Air Pegasus.
