The books are better in every instance. King is the literary genious of our time, I'm confident that our grandchildren's generation will be studying his work in their Literature classes. I boycott the movies, they don't do the books justice.RiSkyBiZ-13
The books are a million times better, agreed. But I am excited to see The Mist though...

You should see 1408, its much better than the book and actually gives an interesting backstory.

Well, I'm a hypocrit in this instance. I saw the movie, and I agree it was very good. I'm mainly talking about the 'made for TV movies,' the higher budget ones are nicely done.

the made for TV ones are bad I agree with you there. Desperation was awful yet the book was so good. There are still lots of bad bigger budget king movies, dreamcatcher was really bad.

You mean sick in a bad way right? im assuming so cause Eli roth is a pretty bad director. For a movie like Cell you need somebody like George Romero or john carptenter.
I ment sick in a good way. I love Eli Roth's films; he's the only person in America that can make a movie gorey enough for me. lol

Even he himself says he's not a very good writter.
Im surprised no on has said Misery...I dunno maybe I just didn't see it.
For me it's either Misery or The Shining.
The Green Mile was good movie but if you try to compare it to the books, it sucks.

I don't really care for Stephen King. Read a few of them and wasen't impressed.
Eli Roth is making an adaptation of Cell, so that should be sick. BrokenDreams13Except for the fact that Eli Roth has never made a decent movie.

hes just being modest:P To me stortelling is the most important quality and author has, they dont have to be a literary genius to be a great writer. Stephen king has written some of the best stories of our time, that is why i think he is a great writer.
[QUOTE="Apollo5000"]Probably Shawshank. However my favourite is either IT or LangoliersFilm-Guy
i remember the langoliers:D I watched that ages ago, cheesy but a classic.
I really find it only cheesy towards the end. You know, when the langoliers actually show up and then sense, logic & reason are just out the window.

You're right, he's made 3 good movies.

He made one: Cabin Fever. Which is amazing.
My favs (not in order): The Shining, Shawshank Redemption, and the Green Mile.

how were any of the hostel movies good?
The best 3 Stephen King (based) movies:
1.The ShawShank Redemption (adapted from "Rita Hayworth and the ShawShank Redemption" in 'Skeleton Crew').
2.Stand By Me (adapted from "The Body" in 'Different Seasons').
3. 'Misery' or 'The Green Mile'
Honorable Mention: 'CreepShow','Cats Eye''1408' and Kubricks 'The Shining'
Worst SK movies:
1. Cujo- Not only is the book fairly boring, the movie is in the top of 'Worst Movies Ever Made'.
2. 'Running Man' - Almost no relation to the story, other than the name (See 'LawnMower Man')
3.'The TommyKnockers' or 'The Stand'. Both stories were badly butchered from the books.
(Dis-)Honarble Mentions: 'It', 'Maximum Overdrive', 'Silver Bullet'.

I love Kings novels but i disagree with the second part of that statement. I can't see people studying King novels for literature classes. Stephen King novels are fantastic entertainment and are amoung my favorite books to read, but you can't compare them to truley great literature.
Best King adaptations? Shawshank Redemption and The Shining are my favorites, The Green Mile was very well done as well.
I remember the made for tv movie The Langoliers, i really enjoyed that (the story is in Four Past Midnight, it is decent, the movie was made...geez probablly 10 or 15 years ago)...it wasn't a fantastic movie, but it was a really fun flick.
IT.
Seriously. **** clowns.syztem
Have you (and all the others who said IT) read the novel? The novel is amazing...the movie doesn't even pass a decent flick, it really has few redeeming qualities...
Interesting so many people including me now have said The shining. Stephen King has stated that he does not like the movie or was it that it didn't repesent the book correctly well its one or the other or both.
The book is very diffrent to the film while the film had a really cool ending the book was very diffrent and the ending was awful happy go luck generic ending.
My favouite king book is the The stand but the film was god awful.
Worst SK movies:
1. Cujo- Not only is the book fairly boring, the movie is in the top of 'Worst Movies Ever Made'.
RW_66
I think that is a little extreme. It isn't film making at its finest, but it was a decent flick i think. I liked the novel (it is an easy, short read, not amoung my favorites, but still good), the only part that upset me in the movie is the ending, changing that ending from the novels ending completly changes the tone of the movie, and in my mind ruined it.

Perhaps so but the other guy said he was a literary genius. :P
Oh, and IMO he's not a great storyteller. The stories are very interesting indeed but the telling of them is a little lacklustre which is why there are (and marketing) so many films based on them. Cause he has a great idea and a pretty good story but he just doesn't write them exceptionally. Don't get me wrong though I liked Shawkshank and it was pretty good.
Anyway as for the thread of the one's that I'd seen I'd say The Shining. But I think I liked The Green Mile more.
Haven't seen many of them, but my I loved The Mist, Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile (haha all directed by the same guy), and 1408 was pretty good too.
Not a lot of love for The Mist, I see. I'm thinking a lot of people hated the ending...I thought it was an excellent horror film.
Rockclmbr6
The ending on the Mist was great. Had me in stiches. Have to say from reading the novella I was wondering how they were going to do that because the book ending didn't seem like it would fly in theaters. I think most of the movies are good though more for entertainment campy laugh values, like the mist (horrible acting, great looking monsters, some really good yucks, and a great ending) rather than actual good horror movies.
Kubrick's Shining was by far the best adaptation I've seen even if King didn't like it.
And as far as King being a literary genius... The short stories and most of the novellas are really good, but I've just read too many of the novels which turn out to be cookie cutter horror by the numbers to really agree with that.
