Without actually living there you should try this: http://www.alljapaneseallthetime.com/blog/all-japanese-all-the-time-ajatt-how-to-learn-japanese-on-your-own-having-fun-and-to-fluency

Also this: http://www.amazon.com/Remembering-Kanji-Volume-Complete-Characters/dp/0824835921/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366508733&sr=8-1&keywords=remembering+the+kanji and get his books on Hiragana and Katakana

Romaji is the Japanese name for the alphabet.

Hiragana and Katakana through something like realkana. Learn how to recongize kanji from each other using RTK, do the core 6k, learn grammar through sentences or something like Tae Kim or Japanese The Manga Way. I generally suggest to learn about various resources and ways of studying and do what appeals to you the most.

I don't suggest taking a class (and not studying outside of it), or using programs like Rosetta Stone.

Hey dude it's going to be hard.. Though, if your heart is really into it.. It will make it a lot easier.. be patient with it. Also, you should be constantly trying to have a conversation with a native speaker. The best way to learn.

[QUOTE="Chicken453"][QUOTE="lo_Pine"][QUOTE="Chicken453"] You realise i'm 18 years old right.

As soon as you resorted to insulting someone over the Internet, yes, I was pretty sure you were a teenager.

Oh and how old is an enlightened being such as yourself?

Old enough to know that teenagers are consumed by their emotions and still think the world revolves around them-20s. 22 to be exact.

Don't listen to him all languages are useful. Learn Hirigana and Katakana first. Then learn basic JLPT 5 and go downwards. Get a book called Japanese for busy people.

Don't learn Japanese. Japan is on the down swing economically. It was big in the 80's, 90's 00's.

U won't use it.

We don't necessarily know why OP wants to learn Japanese. He never said he wanted to do business with them, he could just want to play Japanese only games.

The language you learn certainly does have something to do with it. How useful is learning Swahili in order to generate real productivity, not much. I was saying that there is no reason to take the time to learn a language that isn't really useful in the productivity of the world.

What. Let me give u something. I speak English and Portuguese, I'm learning Japanese and will eventually learn Spanish, I also live in Europe where the majority of languages spoken are not English or Mandarin so are you telling me those are all useless now, because in your eyes they generate no real productivity?

I call bullshit on that. There are more than one reason to learn a different language. Here's one: What you study requires you to be able to read the language.

The financial center of the world is London, followed by NYC. People speak English there. China is the second largest economy in the world and China depends on the American economy which speaks English. The major players in the world need to speak English and the future of the world is in China which speaks Mandarin. And yes, I am telling you that the languages you know except for English, are useless because you are not learning Mandarin.

Wtf is wrong with you Io_Pine. I've said nothing about Hawaiian or Swahili, did I say i was learning either of those languages, NO. So stop bringing them into your weak ass argument. What do you not understand, There are benefits to learning languages other than English and Mandarin. Perhaps not for you someone who never intends to leave his small part of the world and rant and rave about every other language being useless.

You resort to insults in an argument which does not say anything positive about your internal security. What benefits are there to learning other languages than English or Mandarin if generating productivity is not the goal?

I am not talking about any specific field........I'll try to type this slower for you to understand: If your chosen field of study (generic, not specific, vague) requires you to learn a certain language due to the expectations of you to understand (at least) how to read it (any language. French, German, Arabic, Swahili), then it is useful to be able to speak it/learn it.

Even if it's "useless" (such a horrible word in this context, anyways). Why the hell does it matter? It is commendable to learn a language because you just want to.

[QUOTE="Ring_of_fire"][QUOTE="lo_Pine"][QUOTE="Ring_of_fire"] I am not talking about any specific field........I'll try to type this slower for you to understand: If your chosen field of study (generic, not specific, vague) requires you to learn a certain language due to the expectations of you to understand (at least) how to read it (any language. French, German, Arabic, Swahili), then it is useful to be able to speak it/learn it.

What I'm trying to get you to answer is what field of study is there that requires you to learn any language other than English, Mandarin or possibly Spani.sh?

Musicology. inb4 "Musicology is useless" diatribe.

Exactly, art. Want to learn a real commendable language that is universal? Learn math.

[QUOTE="lo_Pine"][QUOTE="Chicken453"]Ugh this is a headache. For one, like the other poster states if my area of study requires me to speak a certain language (Which is does, or will should i say as i go to Uni this year) then there's one reason. Chicken453
Be practical, what is your field of study?

Mine is well will be Biology.

Over 2 billion people speak English or Mandarin in the world I guarantee that you will find some useful biology colleagues.

"Mine is well"?

It sure as hell isn't English.

So your argument is so pathetic that you have to pick at my own english.

No, I'd rather learn about something that I find interesting than to learn math even if it is not "practical" if I don't continue down the path. Besides, you're moving the goal posts of this argument. It's not about what career fields are useful.

I've already found a University, as you can see I don't live in the USA so i won't be going to a college will I. I'm about to finish college this summer, in the UK college is 16 to 18/19.
