So guys, whats the best book you've had to read for school? Any grade you want, or maybe you don't have a favourite, what was the worst thing you've ever read.

For me, I've loved anything that I've read in the past two years, To Kill a Mockingbird, Glass Menagerie and Brave new World. I absolutely hate Shakespeare though.

Shakespeare is brilliant, it's his vocabulary that is an issue. Most people just don't use many of his words anymore.

I do not care much for being forced to read and analyze literature... but I do enjoy reading upon my own accord.

The best book I have ever read is Burmese Days by George Orwell.

Because you can't understand them, right?

Tell me, is there any other reason people dislike Shakespeare?

Actually, Shakespeare wrote in Modern English and virtually all the words he used are still in usage. He simply had a very large vocabulary. Incidentally, I love his stuff. Especially, Hamlet, King Lear, Henry IV Part 1 and Titus Andronicus.

I'm not terribly fond of his Sonnets. They're a little whiny and pathetic, even if they demonstrate technical mastery. That, and they get a little redundant.

i wished we would read lord of the flies or 1984 in school. those are two of my favorite books, but we tend to read more boring stuff in my school.

Good call. I had to read Beloved for a course a couple semesters ago. Toni Morrison makes me want to puke.

Best-Romeo and Juliet.  Loved the vocabulary, loved every single thing about it.  I expected to hate it, but it's now one of my favorites.

Worst-Some stupid book called "Cages" that we had to read in 7th grade about some moron girl who steals a bracelet from a store and then learns her lesson...was a total waste of time.  I also didn't really like Lord of the Flies...seemed like shock value for the sake of shock value.

Best - 1984 by George Orwell, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and Sandokan by Emilio Salgari (not necessarily a very good one, but it was the one book that got me into reading when I was a boy.)

I don't understand why many people don't like Shakespear. At least when we were reading his in school, everyone hated him except for 5 or 6 people. In my opinion, though, his writings are fantastic.

Regardless, those words aren't used by the average English user. A pity, I would love to be able to know those words by heart, but I have to figure it out the hard way.
