I was planning to bid for an item, but there is a chance that it might get expensive...so for example lets say I bid on something, and i have the highest bid, but it turned out to be too expensive, can i cancel my bid right before the end of the auction say....24 hours

No. When you're placing a bid you're making a contract that essentially says "I agree to pay up to this amount of money for this item". If you can't afford a bid then don't place it, easy as that. You're now stuck having to pay what you said you would. Better hope someone else outbids you (which will probably happen unless you bid an idiotic amount of money that no one in their right mind is going to try to match) and remember to only place bids that you can actually afford in the future.

I don't remember how, but you can cancel, but only in the first 12 hours ( maybe less) after you placed the bid and only if you set a wrong number, for example 1000$ instead of 100$.

nope thats not true. you cannot cancel a bid. as gameguy said its a contract. that said you can always try talking to the seller and they can opt to offer the item to the second highest bidder. however if you think its going to get to expensive either A) set a limit to where you will stop or B) just dont bid

O RLY? They can't do anything if you decide not to pay. I guess they COULD take it to court, but no one is sueing over some crappy e bay item.

When you bid, you say how high you're willing to pay for it. So it can't get "too expensive" unless you screwed up.

Why on earth would you buy something if you don't even have enough money?

I'm a nice guy, if someone made a mistake I will understand, it happened to me once and I canceled the auction. I would think other people would do the same thing. Pretty frustrating though.

Get enough bad feedback and people will not deal with you though (either buy or sell)

No, but let's say you put in a maximum bid of $100. If the person under you had bid $50, then you pay only one step above that $50.
