Seriously... the whole black metal scene in Norway back in the 90s was crazy. Remember when Varg from Burzum mudered Euronymous from Mayhem?

On 10 August 1993, Varg Vikernes of Burzum murdered Mayhem guitarist Øystein Aarseth (aka 'Euronymous'). On that night, Vikernes and Snorre Ruch of Thorns travelled from Bergen to Aarseth's apartment in Oslo. Upon their arrival a confrontation began, which ended when Vikernes fatally stabbed Aarseth. His body was found outside the apartment with twenty-three cut wounds – two to the head, five to the neck, and sixteen to the back.[20]

It has been speculated that the murder was the result of a power struggle, a financial dispute over Burzum records, or an attempt at "out doing" a stabbing in Lillehammer committed the year before by another black metal musician, Bard Faust.[21] Vikernes claims that Aarseth had plotted to torture him to death and videotape the event – using a meeting about an unsigned contract as a pretext.[22] On the night of the murder, Vikernes claims he intended to hand Aarseth the signed contract and "tell him to **** off", but that Aarseth attacked him first.[22] Additionally, Vikernes has stated that most of Aarseth's cut wounds were caused by broken glass he had fallen on during the struggle.[22]

Regardless of the circumstances, Vikernes was arrested within days, and a few months later was sentenced to 21 years in prison for both the murder and church arsons. In a controversial display, Vikernes actually smiled at the moment his verdict was read, an image that was widely reprinted in the news media.[22] In May 1994, Mayhem finally released the album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, which features Aarseth on electric guitar and Vikernes on bass guitar. While granted a brief leave in 2003, Vikernes attempted to escape his bonds in Tønsberg, but shortly thereafter he was re-arrested driving a stolen vehicle and carrying various firearms.[23]

Wikipedia

And the church burnings?

Members and fans of the black metal scene claimed responsibility for over 50 arsons directed at Christian churches in Norway from 1992 to 1996.[13] Many of the buildings were hundreds of years old, and widely regarded as important historical landmarks. One of the first and most notable was Norway's Fantoft stave church, which the police believed was destroyed by Varg Vikernes of the one-man band Burzum.[13] However, Vikernes would not be convicted of any arson offences, until his arrest for the murder of Øystein Aarseth, widely known as Euronymous, in 1993 (see below). The cover of Burzum's EP Askeash) portrays a photograph of the Fantoft stave church after the arson; however it is unconfirmed if Varg took this picture himself or not. The musicians Samoth,[18]Faust,[18] and Jørn Inge Tunsberg[13] were also convicted for church arsons.

Today, opinions differ within the black metal community concerning the legitimacy of such actions. Guitarist Infernus and former vocalist Gaahl of the band Gorgoroth have praised the church burnings in interviews, with the latter also opining "there should have been more of them, and there will be more of them".[1] However, Necrobutcher and Kjetil Manheim of Mayhem have disapproved of the church burnings, with the latter claiming "It was just people trying to gain acceptance within a strict group (the black metal scene) ... they wanted some sort of approval and status".[19]

Wikipedia

What are your thoughts on black metal history? There's way more behind it than what I've posted such as Dead from Mayhem commiting suicide and using that as an album cover. And that same guy sniffing dead birds. Seriously, go to Mayhem's wikipedia page. :P

Was it Mayhem that the one member litterally shot himself in the head with a shotgun and they took a picture of his brain before the police got there and put it on their next album? Stuff like that is crazy. There are a few bands that seem to care more about promoting satanism and whatever more than they care about the music. I don't really like that, not because of the satanism, but because I think bands should at least try when it comes to music.

It's really mostly Mayhem that makes Black Metal history somewhat interesting, and by Mayhem, I mean Varg Vikernes. Gaahl is also an interesting fellow, I was kind of shocked when I found out he was gay

The only thing sillier than thinking rappers are Gs and pimps for getting shot/shooting people and committing crimes, is the whole killing people and burning history for no reason is metal and brootalz.

Varg didn't play for Mayhem very long. Mayhem and Burzum made black metal history basically.

The stuff that many Hip Hop artists come from is real however...It exists. This black metal ish is just some crazy guys with cabin fever, a tiny minority. It doesn't exist among real people, just psychos.

Burzum is extremely talented, I don't know if you've ever checked it out but he's a one man band who's still held his talent after like 15 years in jail. Not to mention he made 2 albums in jail with a synthesizer and tape recorder.

Modern Hip-hop pretty much chronicles the crack era something that historians and criminologist write papers and books about. The only difference is instead of it being a college professor stating FBI uniform crime reports and new reports, it comes first hand from guys that saw it first hand.

The Swedish/Scandinavian death metal scene is far more interesting in my opinion. If you really want more reading on the second wave artists, read:

There's other books out there as well. This one is just the most well-known. Black metal has the most extensively covered scene in all of metal pretty much (although the war/blackened death stuff is still pretty underground in terms of musical history).

You're talking about the second wave artists, and the more intelligent ones claimed that it was done to "change their culture." Norwegian culture has some pretty extreme cultural conservatism for a modern nation. I do agree that a lot of it was pretty dumb though. In fact it's why many organizations with similar views about cultural change didn't want to associate with them at the time, although a few were open to the more outspoken and mature members.

Luckily the few intelligent members from the second wave moved on to other more intelligent forms of protest (Ihsahn is a great example of this).

It's alright for an overview of the history, first wave through the second, their media coverage, etc. which was what I was suggesting it for. As a musical reference or anything like that it's utterly useless (unlike the death metal equivalent, Swedish Death Metal). I know Varg whined about Lords Of Chaos saying "they took my quotes out of context!" and stuff like that, but he whines about literally everything...

I shall, but bear in mind Black Metal is about atmosphere over technicality, and if it's your first time hearing black metal it will be noise with some guy schreeching over top of it, so be nice.

Well I've sampled these, and tbh, for a first time listener I'm liking what I'm hearing. Of course, I'm picky when it comes to vocalists, and sadly, these vocals barely fit the term. The most I'd stray from my tastes when it comes to vocalists is Opeth. Outta curiousity, what brand metal is that? I have Blackwater Park and love it.

On Blackwater Park they were progressive death metal but now (since Ghost Reveries/Damnation) they seemed to have mellowed out into a more progressive rock/metal sort of hybrid. If you like Blackwater Park I'd suggest Still Life (my favorite by them) and My Arms, Your Hearse.

OK, thanks for the recommendations :D

Yeah man, recorder and slide whistle and a little bit of triangle. But seriously, I get what you're saying. He is still talented in my opinion.

That song has really freaky and unique atmosphere, like all of his music.

And this is what he made fresh out of prison :P

It's not something I'd listen to on a regular basis however.

Well, in Verdi's hometown there were riots over whether or not he'd get a position at a school. >_>

Speaking as someone who isn't a fan of black metal, I think it'd do well to forget about the lunacy of the early days.

To me the history of Jazz and Blues is the most interesting. From Negro spirituals to vaudevilleto ragtime to country blues to bop to jump bluesand everything in between. This also relates to Appalachian folk and country.
