I don't listen to much Metal, Grind, or Hardcore (well, "Hardcore") anymore. In fact, I'll smugly admit that I would rather listen to Chopin or traditional Roma music, but I used to live for them. Anyway...
Death Metal/Black Metal/Grindcore and (GASP!) Crust bands of note for me: Gorgoroth, Cannibal Corpse (with Chris Barnes), Autopsy, Obituary, Cryptopsy, Death, Bathory, Acid Bath, F**k...I'm Dead, Carcass, Burzum, Mayhem, Dark Throne, Dying Fetus, (old) Cradle of Filth, Disgorge, Napalm Death (specifically the 'Scum' LP), Last Days of Humanity, Driller Killer, Pig Destroyer, Exhumed, Venom, Entombed, Hypocrisy, Mortician, Assuck, DOOM, Axiom, Pelican, Harmony As One (ex-Napalm Death), His Hero Is Gone, Man Is The Bastard, Opeth, Emperor, Theatre of Tragedy, and Gism. I don't know if you're interested (or already informed), but Screamo (not to be confused with the "mainstream" variant) is a comparable genre as well (musically speaking), and is certainly aesthetically superior. Orchid, Song of Zarathustra, Reversal of Man, Neil Perry, Off Minor, Saetia, Angelhair, Heroin, Swing Kids, Portraits of Past, Daitro (France), Alcatraz (France), and Anomie (France) are all notable Screamo bands.
All astounding, and all of the top of my head.
And no, mainstream Hardcore and Post-Hardcore are not even gateways to HARDCORE, much less Metal or Grind, nor are the bands you listed acceptable alternatives or remotely comparable to the bands everyone else has listed, no offense. Well, I'll agree that BTBM is acceptable Metal. Not quite what they used to be though...
I'm from Tampa, and I remember seeing the original Underoath line-up play at a Christian venue-club-goober hangout, and all of their fans were praying along with the old vocalist. So Metal. Admittedly though, those were their best days musically.
The post above me made me realize that I completely forgot Nile.
