If you have a surround sound system you will probably notice the sound quality is better. I don't think there would be any noticeable difference in video quality.

Visually not really, it will just look like a good DVD. Sound may be improved though, provided you have a sound system in place.

Video quality is only as good as the TV it's playing on. So anything in HD is going to look the same as SD when played on an SD TV.

I did come across a site (don't ask me for a link, it was a while ago) which compared still shots from The Fellowship Of The Ring from the DVD version and the Blu Ray version downsampled to SD resolution... and the Blu-Ray did have better image quality.

But I wouldn't say the improvement in image quality was strong enough to make choosing the Blu Ray over the DVD worthwhile. You'd probably only notice if you literally did an A to B comparison.

Also, I don't know/can't remember whether the shots from the Blu Ray had been interlaced or not while downsampling. They should have been. If they weren't, then it wasn't an accurate comparison.

I just had a look at that site, and the HD was downsampled. But ive realised that as most pc monitors now are usuallly jsut below HD quality then using them for this isn't that helpful. But, as the PS3 can use youtube I can just play one of the many comparison videos straight to my SD tv and get a better look.
