It took a surprisingly long time to do it but someone finally decrypted the HDCP master key. Blu-ray discs can now be unlocked an copied. Interesting stuff. I wonder what effect it will have on the industry and I wonder if people will start pirating them now.

I thought this has been done for a while now. Their are plenty of ripped bluray movies available for torrenting/pirating. Whats the difference between this and the hdcp being cracked?

Maybe it's a lot easier to do now because you don't have to crack each Blu-ray individually?

No need to wonder, probably thousands of pirate discs in circulation even as we speak.

Meh, no matter to me. I don't try to steal things from companies. As a software developer, it makes me kind of mad that people are so eager to steal. More work goes into ripping off legitimate companies than goes into real progress.

my friend been downloading bluray torrents since last year, so this is pretty old and i'm not really worried about it because how many people actually know how to use it and blu rays are bigger than dvd's in size so ehh instead of going through all the trouble to get it for free why not go and throw down 20 bucks and support the people behind the movies.

Bah - just buy the movies.

They're not expensive. It's not like those crazy expensive Laserdiscs from back in the day.

Make mod chips used to rip discs that can already be ripped without them?

Not to rip, to play them.

Where does it say that? The article seems to only mention ripping them.

It mentions the ability to create software. Which is why the code is important. Currently you can rip Blu Rays to your PC by transcoding. That's fine, but you'd only be able to play on your PC. There is no software that would allow you to play the Blu Ray in a Blu Ray player. This is the reason the code is important. It allows you to trick the system into playing the disc. This also means advancements in copying video games will happen. Meaning with the proper mod chip, you'll be able to play copied video games.
