Is this the next BIG media format?

http://www.hdtvuk.tv/2008/10/100gb_1920pcapa.html

100GB 1920p-capable high definition discs on their way

It's enough to make you cry. If physical disc formats really do have some shelf life, then Royal Digital Media's new optical disc format may have some worth, but if it's at the expense of Blu-Ray, it's going to play havoc with the consumer.

Technical part first: Royal Digital Media has developed a 100GB-capacity disc which can handle four hours' worth of 1920p HD video -- "the next generation of high definition" according to the company.

The killer part of the equation is that the cost of the discs and players is expected to equal those of traditional DVDs, therefore undercutting Blu-ray.

"The industry's problem, which Sony has been unable to solve with Blu-ray, is how to transition into HD without destroying the existing DVD industry or gouging the pocketbooks of consumers. We have the solution and can solve this without having to drastically overhaul the entire infrastructure of DVD production," proclaimed RDM's CEO Eugene Levich.

Though the technology is arguably better, it's a similar rationale to that of NME's VMD format. However, it may well be possible to update existing DVD players through proprietary software and firmware upgrades, and the possible replacement of a single chip.

RDM is currently in negotiation with a number of companies to bring the technology to Europe and Asia early next year.

**************************************************************************************

What baffles me is there hasn't been any further information on this new media since Winter 2008. What did Sony do. Buy them out or something?

1920p... Meh, pointless. 2560x1600 is overkill..

Aren't there already prototype BD-ROMs north of 400 GB that are compatible with existing players?

Not always more powerful means better at selling, this has been proved by history.

People said the same thing about 1080P, but those HDTV's got made, so I'm assuming companies who make 1920 HDTV's as well. This resolution would be good for 50in - 60in HDTV's. It wouldn't have much effect with HDTV's below this size. I'm still wondering what happened to this company. I can't find any further information.

I'm in no rush. Bluray looks good enough to me right now. Interesting for the future though.

Pointless now, since it doesn't seem like there are any 1920p HDTV's on the market, and the TC itself said that it would pretty much be useless on TV's outside of the 50in-60in range, but 10 or so years from now, who knows?

The future is not disks, it's flash-based memory and distribution over internet... Pointless.

The only thing I dislike about all this is how they make advances so fast. Man, I still remember when I bought my DVD player. Now it's Blu-Ray, and then probably that? I know I don't have to buy it now, but when movies start coming out almost exclusively in that format and such, then yeah, you know how it goes. Ah well, that's technology. :)

I actually thin DVD lasted long enough, but yeah, Blu-ray is new, not everybody owns one yet so making a succesor to a thechnology that hasn't reach a standard status is kind of pointless.

I havent even bothered to get into Blu Ray yet. Probably wont till they stop making DVD's. I just dont care enough about picture quality to waste money on a new player and spend the extra cash it costs for a blu ray disc compared to the average cost of DVDs.

Far as I'm concerned blu-ray isn't even the "big format". It's still DVD. Far as I'm concerned, DVD will not be phased out untill something massively different is available. DVD to bluray is no where near as big a leap as vhs to DVD was. Blu-ray's advantage over DVD: Better picture, more disk space (and I really haven't seen many movies that cannot fit on one DVD). DVD's advantage over VHS: Interactive menus, smaller size, bigger storage, multiple subtitles and languages on a single disk, bonus features that couldn't be done with VHS, Scene selection, deleted scenes, etc.

Even more interestingly, I can't find any references to Royal Digital Media outside of stories from late 2008 dealing with this press release.

Exactly! :) I still don't have a Blue-Ray, so this sucks for me. :( They need to take it easy. ;)

Indeed. I know I won't be buying a Blue-Ray until movies come out exclusively on it. I did the same when DVDs came out and people still had VHS. I ended up buying the DVD player when VHSs stopped coming out.

Blue-Ray is cool, but it's not enough for me to want to buy it. I'd feel like I was replacing my DVD player with another DVD player.

I'd say it's better. I'd rather anger the minority who bought blu ray players already than wait until everyone owns one and then immediately replace it.
