Death Note - a 12 volume manga series about a hischool/college student who finds a note book that can kill any human.

Welcome to the N.H.K. - a novel about a seclusive college dropout who thinks there is a conspiracy with a Japanese Broadcasting Network

.hack//AI buster - a novel about some strange events happening in an MMORPG game

Hilaru no Go - a 23 volume manga series about a kid playing Go with a ghost that poseses him (that doesn't sound interesting but it really is quite good..)

Hey mate! I saw Death Note(anime) up until 20th episode and it was quite good. Would the manga still be interesting/better/worth it?

The Witcher! Holy smokes! My computer just died last week, and I won't get a new one, probably until next summer but I really wanna play the witcher game.

However mate, I am not a very experienced reader, and thus since fantasy books seem to be so hardcore, indepth, extreme i have only read the first Lord of the rings book, and it was pretty good but not very memorable.

I heard the witcher books have plenty of grotesqe violence, rape, murder, and other horrors that will stick with you!?? is it as complex as something like The Wheel of time or something?

Heh, i wouldn't know. I don't read books. Just heard it was good. Maybe you should just stick with the game then. It IS an adult story though.

Yuk! I remember reading The Giver in high school. As far as what I would suggest reading, I'm a big fan of anything Stephen King/Richard Bachman. Duma Key in 2008!

Im not a experienced reader. I just realised that most of the stuff on tv these days suck. im sick of lame ass reality shows and that crap. Then I would rather want to read a good book.

im really trying to find some stuff... i tried looking at phillip k dick, 1984 by orson wells, lord of the flies and some of the others suggested here.

im not really sure. i think tom clancy might be to stiff for me.

i also looked at i am legend, but i might wait for the movie.

I really would like a book with an awesome kick ass male lead character. is there not something like a book version of gladiator, 300, oldboy or something? something epic, awesome, and cool. something that will make you want to jump out of the window!!!

Two of my favorite new reads from the last year are:

"Stranger in a Strange Land" by Robert Heinlein. It's science fiction about a guy brought back to earth after being raised until he's a full grown adult by Martians and how he adapts to human culture afterwards. Some decent action, a moderately adult oriented theme, and a lasting message about humanity and how lucky we are.

"Canticle for Leibowitz" by Walter M. Miller Jr. THis one is about the world having to rebuild after a nuclear holocost. Granted it isn't very scientifically accurate anymore, but it is interesting to think about North America in a very mideval sense. It follows a few different characters, none of which are very memorable (except for Lazarus) but the story was very good.

Oh, and I highly suggest reading The Two Towers and The Return of the King. The Fellowship of the Ring is great and all, but I have always felt it is the weakest part of the LotR trilogy. The second two books really pick up the pace, and Aragorn is a freaking bad..., a much better character than from the movies.

I could never get into the Lord of the Rings books. The movies were good, but the books seemed too drawn out for my liking. Much the same problem as Harry Potter, but I didn't care for those movies any more than the books. I think the best read I've had in the last year has been Richard Bachman's Blaze (see jalexbrown's picks). I've not quite finished it, but it's an excellent book. The plot is kind of hard to sum up (if you're familiar with Stephen King/Richard Bachman's works, you'll understand), but the story is very well written for a story that was one of King's first pieces of writing (I believe it was written originally in the 70s and then edited in 2006). Stephen King has written many better stories, but Blaze is an excellent read. It's not too lengthy either, so anyone who avoids King's work like the plague because of some phobia of wordy stories fear not. Cell was another great story written by King (also released in 2006). The story honest-to-God made me think it would make a cool video game. Kinda like Resident Evil in a few ways.

I am currently reading World War Z by Max Brooks, its about survivers telling their experiences through the "Zombie War"

but I have a question of my own. Can someone tell me a good way to read about books online, like find a summary of a specific book. I hate Wikipedia because it ALWAYS spoils something when I'm reading a summary of a book. Its like "this is the story of a boy and his dog (who dies later in the book... like the boy's grandfather... and the boy himself)".

Its really annoying and I'm sick and tired of it happening. Can someone help me please?

The Scarlet Letter was pretty good, but I liked The Crucible better (yea, I know it's a play).

Catcher in the Rye pissed me off. I've tried to reread it to see what's so great, but I can't get through it, maybe I'll try again.

Slaughterhouse Five was awesome. I love that book.

A Rumor of War - I have this book, just haven't read it yet, thanks for the suggestion.

Haven't heard of Stalingrad.

To clarify things somewhat I enjoyed The Scarlet Letter and Catcher mainly because of Dimmesdale and Holden(obviously). Irelated toboth of themnearly everytime they felt or thought anything. I liked Dimmesdale much more than Proctor because I found him to be muchmore dynamic. Also Dimmesdale redemption in the end is much more awesomethan Proctor's useless, life-costingdisplay of pride.

Secondly I would recommend reading A Rumor of War, buti retract that statement b/cthe best account of 'nam is definately The Things They Carried which is a collection of short stories.

If you like manga, you could do a lot worse than read the Battle Royale series.

I am currently reading this thing of darkness, about the life of Commander Robert FitzRoy, Comander of the Beagle, for those that don't know. Easily one of the best books I have ever read.

Well I think the manga is better than the anime, but the anime is quite similar except for some of the later episodes. I suggest you finish the anime, it only has 37 episodes, the story is really good.

I'm reading Farenhite 451. It's pretty good, but very boring at times. I have about 30 pages left. I'll finish it tomorrow. Anyway, it's about the corruption of the government and downfall of society. The book was written in the 1950's, and it takes place in the future, the 1990's. The firefighters burn books so people don't get offended. Basically, the government dictates everything, and after the main character, Guy Montag, a firefighter, talks to a young girl about this, he realizes that what he's doing is wrong. It's an alright book.

The Outsiders have some pretty bad*** male characters. You said that's what you wanted, and this book supplies plenty. Except for Johnny. He's a pansy.

The whole Harry Potter series is good.

Speak, but the main character is a female.

The Catcher in the Rye was pretty good.

You Don't Know Me is one of my favorite novels, ever. It's a great book.

A few others, too. If you are young, you might enjoy the Series of Unfortunate Events series, but if you are above twelve, (Which you probably are.) you've probably outgrown them, just like I did. (I read 12 out of 13. Yup, I skipped the last one! Maybe I'll read it one day...)

Anyway, have fun!

Northern Lights (golden compass for americans for some reason), the subtle knife, and the amber spyglass, all by Phillip Pullmen best trilogy ever. Edit: can't believe poeple are reccomending the catcher in the rye, I wanted to die after finishing it, it was that depressing and boring... only read it for English at school.
