Not surprising really, UK has really struggled recently in the last few years,

Speaking of economies, The Economist has an article in which it states that China has already overtaken the USA in quite a number of different sectors however it wont be until at least 2018 if not 2021 and further for China to even achieve pairity with the US economy.

Well its almost certain that within the next 10-20 years China will become the biggest economy in the world. USA is in major debt (We're talking trillions here).

Its a shame as many predicted that by 2016 the UK would have overtaken France in the bigger economy.

Probably, I'm expecting India and China to quickly overtake western economies.

Sure it will, especially when most of the US debt is owed to China. I, for one, will welcome our new overlords.

Poverty in the US is almost high class in India. the 30 million living in the slums are living worse than our homeless people are. You can't even compare the 2. Heck people living in poverty in the US have cell phones, internet, and basic cable. It's no where near the same here as it is there.

Real economy is all about stuff that you can eat, wear or use. At one point, the US and then European countries (except Germany) simply forgot that and settled for dealing with numbers on computer screens that went from one place to another while deliberately letting TEH BACKWARDS 3RD WORLD COUNTRIES LOL manufacture all the real, tangible stuff that actually provides solid grounds for any economy.

And then they act surprised when those bubbles burst and those other countries become bigger and bigger.

Your right kinda, except that poor in the US is not high class in India. In India you have very poor people, and then the middle class and high class. The Upper class are millionaires(even in Dollar terms). Indias problem is that there are a LOT more working class people than there should be.

congrats to Brazil, though I reckon this is based on GDP , so its got nothing to do with the living conditions in the country.

HDI (human development index) is a fairly reliable method for calculating quality of life, and in there Brazil is 84th in the world

yeah they have a big economy, but the question is , how much of that profit goes down to the masses.

Maybe, but Brazil is a country the world needs.

Its where it is now because of the resources it has. What they don't realise is that by letting westerners into their rainforest they are destroying something we rely on everyday. IF/When the amazon rainforest is destroyed, how will South America breath?

They're destroying the rain forest because of slash and burn farming not because of westerners. Brazil has a growing population.

Brazil is part of the BRICs. They're one of the emerging markets in the world. Brazil, Russia, India and China will continue to grow until we pull our collective asses out of the sand and do the things needed to fix the economy.

Thought this article was really good and pretty much nails our economic situation.

Fascinating article. But on a side note, Russia is losing population rapidly and if anything, it will drop out of the top 10 economies in the next 10-20 years because it can't sustain its workforce and an intellectual class that continues to emigrate out of Russia.

It's not that great of an achievement given European countries situations. Brazil's abilities to maintain sustained growth are minimal; the complete inertia in trying to achieve minimal political and legislative reforms will take it's toll in the long-run. Most institutions bet in a capacity of yearly growth of 4,5% of the GDP, yet we can't achieve that average without being above the target for inflation rates. Long term policies are non-existing for most areas of national interest.

The Investment/PIB ratio is ridiculous (stands between 16-18%) and the interest rate needed to achieve minimal control over inflation is way above the hypothetical equilibrium (imagine if the basic interest rates in the U.S. were 11%!). The large international yield in interest rates, financial deficit and high commodities prices - promoting an excess of dollars in the market and therefore overvalued national currency -, are promoting a prolonged process of reducing the industrial sector in favour of the more insulated sectors such as Services (misteriously agropecuary is barely growing).

Result is that after a growth in 7,5% of the GDP in 2010 (effect of the catching up after a year of stagnation and abnormal government spending), we are barely reaching 3% this year. Third trimester had zero growth in GDP, and the 4th is on it's way to near stagnation; meanwhile they lost control over inflation in december and are now overshooting the legal higher band of the legal target for inflation. Imo, the famous case of the 'vôo da galinha' or 'flight of the chicken'.

There are a large amount of problems, deficient infrastructure, stagnation of labour productivity, outdated labour regulations, bad public spending, tax evasion, high taxes, overly complex and cascade taxation, fiscal deficit, extreme corruption, economically depressing judicial and political system... The Main problem is not that these problems exist, any problem can be solved if you are willing to tackle it; the main problem is that those are not tackled or even being seriously discussed. The government and the whole civil society is unable or unwilling to commit to even discuss these problems. We get to worry about events that are turning out to be true frauds like the World Cup.

Like the poet said "Quarenta anos e nenhum problema; resolvido, sequer colocado."

Fascinating article. But on a side note, Russia is losing population rapidly and if anything, it will drop out of the top 10 economies in the next 10-20 years because it can't sustain its workforce and an intellectual class that continues to emigrate out of Russia.

What is the reason for the rapid decline in population and emigration?

Brazil is part of the BRICs. They're one of the emerging markets in the world. Brazil, Russia, India and China will continue to grow until we pull our collective asses out of the sand and do the things needed to fix the economy.

Thought this article was really good and pretty much nails our economic situation.

What is the reason for the rapid decline in population and emigration?

A spreading AIDS epidemic, their birthrate is falling, a bad life expectancy for a so called "developed country" (Men are expected to live until 59 and Women until 72).

More reasons : Low immigration, a high abortion rate, low fertility rate (The average is 2.1 births, Russia is low at 1.3).

Russia is losing about 800,000 citizens each year with death alone.

Oh yes, Russian President vladimir putin told Parliament in rough translation "Promote more ideas for married couples to have SEX. SEX is key to our country surviving".

And its true, in life on average you should be looking to have 2-3 kids on average If you want your family name to continue..

Not surprising really, UK has really struggled recently in the last few years,

Speaking of economies, The Economist has an article in which it states that China has already overtaken the USA in quite a number of different sectors however it wont be until at least 2018 if not 2021 and further for China to even achieve pairity with the US economy.

http://www.economist.com/blogs/dailychart/2010/12/save_date

Well its almost certain that within the next 10-20 years China will become the biggest economy in the world. USA is in major debt (We're talking trillions here).

Its a shame as many predicted that by 2016 the UK would have overtaken France in the bigger economy.

China will never become the largest economy in the world as long as their economy is based on the US buying their products.

They will almost invariably become the world's largest economy.

Cost of living is also rising in Russia and the wages and number of decent jobs are not growing. So there is little incentive for ethnic Russians to produce large families.

Canada is probably 11 or 12, They are wealthy countries by the population is too small so the total GDP of a country will not be that high.

Norway has one of the highest per capita GDP in the world, but with only 5 million people, you're not going to compete will countries with hundreds of millions of people, or, even in the billions like India and China.

With that said, Brazil, with close to 200 million people, not really a surprise that it would overtake UK with 62 Million people.

its not that surprising, they hot alot of oil off the coat iirc about 3 years ago, after the next world cup and olympics i thinks it'll be a very good tourist attraction, which is what china are going for now too, afaik they are now the biggest earners in the world in terms of tourism (so its not just yanks buying their products)

i thought india would be higher up the list

When Brazil cuts down the Amazon Rainforest, thats about 80 percent of the worlds air (Not sure about this) GONE + South Americans gonna be breathing in CO2 and no oxygen.

Also the Congo Rainforest in DR Congo, its important that we preserve the rainforests..

The shocking thing is UAE is nowhere near the Top 10. Looks like their economy went downhill
