Brazil has a lot of natural resources to exploit which is why they're seeing significant growth. Brazil still suffers from massive social inequality (one of the most unequal societies in the world) which it needs to deal with.
Brazil still has a long way to go, and its current reckless approach to its people and rainforest may yet see their economy nosedive in the future.
Too bad our govt sucks.Just a bunch o corrupt, irresponsible socialists, that are using china's large demands to grow our economy. Then they use the positive economic figures to elect their candidate. Then, the dumb masses, blinded by the media, buy it and go there and vote for them.
With all honesty, I don't really think we are on the right path yet. What the west is going through today, may very well be us in 10~20 years.

Agreed. Bring back Collor de Mello so Brazilians can starve again! At least they wouldn't have an evil socialist government that makes baby Jesus cry.
GDP =/= HDIVictorious_Fizethis, GDP has as much to do with population size as it does with the economy. Norway has about 1/10 of the GDP Brazil has, yet standards of living are considerably higher in Norway.

Their treatment of the rainforest is fine, western nations removed a lot of their forests years ago. By the time they run out of rainforest it won't matter any more. Absolute GDP doesn't really matter much outside of national strategy, it's PPP Median GDP which actually shows how well off the population areBrazil has a lot of natural resources to exploit which is why they're seeing significant growth. Precisely. I am happy to see this country is finally getting somewhere and starting to live up to its long foreseen potential, but our HDI still sucks too much. There is a lot of work to be done and many things need to be fixed when it comes to politics and economics.

Even still, GDP per capita in Britain is much higher, too. (that corresponds much more closely w. HDI)
With the yearly growth it's having, I predict Brazil will be the third largest economy in the world in a span of twenty years. It has all that made the U.S. an economical superpower: a large size and population, a (now) expanding middle-class and a variety of natural resources. Now, it's much more a matter of gradually making the shift from commodity-exporting nation to technology producing (with their resources): that would cause a natural increase in salaries, leading to greater tax collection and better public welfare policies (healthcare, education, infrastructure, security) and an enlargement of the middle class. Hopefully, with their ever-growing presence in global economy they'll get a decent footing in the WTO -- you'd be surprised at how developing countries get the shaft regarding international commerce and patent-approvals.
The fact that they have a good relationship with most of the twenty largest economies (U.S, the BRICs, a good portion of the EU) and have established themselves as the 'leader' of the developing nations (specially in S. America, where they maintain intense commerce with Argentina and Chile) helps, too. Hopefully there will be a better wealth distribution in the near future, be it by the hand of the State or naturally.
GDP =/= HDIVictorious_FizeHDI doesnt say anything about the wealth, it counts literacy, gdp and life expectancy, what do the first and the last say about the economy?? Its also very biased even racist statistics as countries who using characters like chinese of course have it harder to learn to read while european genetically cant life longer than asians.
yay us. meanwhile, games still cost the equivalent of 100 US dollars, with hardware being even more overpriced.BrunoBRSWhy is that?

HDI already factors in per capita income IIRC.[QUOTE="Victorious_Fize"]GDP =/= HDIHFkamiHDI doesnt say anything about the wealth, it counts literacy, gdp and life expectancy, what do the first and the last say about the economy?? I don't know the inside working of the organizations that use the metric, but if Chinese are having a hard time learning their language because of its characters vis-a-vis easily learned European, maybe they should drop theirs and use European.

HDI already factors in per capita income IIRC.some results in the HDI report are very surprising though , Israel has a higher HDI score than France, Belgium , Finland and the UK , and I know for a fact people earn more in these countries
that said , its not just about how much you earn , its about how much you can buy.

Darkman2007
I think it uses GDP per capita at purchasing power parity, so that's taken into account.
