The Parliament approved a law that would allow scientists to inject human DNA into animal ova, in order to create an embryo. Supporters of the bill paint it as Science vs. the Catholic Church, which neglects the fact that a lot of nonCatholic Christians and most Muslims also oppose this bill.

Here is the whole story

i think the whole idea is kinda creepy. watch out for those mad scientists- don't people ever learn their lessons from Frankenstein- that sometimes science needs to be limited or else it could produce bad things.

oh come on, its not like we are going to create a 'doggyman' here. The nucleus of the animals cells will be removed, seeing as human genes are incompatible with other animal genes. And who in their right minds would ry and create a 'hybrid'

This would allow to grow organs in animals...help humanity, save lives. There are really 2 ways of looking at it.

Hurting Animals whilst helping Humans vs. Not hurting animals to help humans

Individual opinions...a great thing.

I made A topic on this on the GSUK board here before the bill went through, and the general consensus on there was that anything that can help save lives is good. They have to destroy the hybrids after 14 days, so its not like we are creating monsters with 8 legs and 3 eyes or anything like that. They are creating the embryos only. It cannot create "bad things". It is not even comparable to frankenstein.

EDIT: And well done for providing a balanced neutral link. Here's the BBC's page on it for people who want to a balanced article for it rather than the biased one the TC posted.

They're not breeding man-bear-pigs! There could potentially be huge benefits from this experiment. One area they are trying to make headway on, is eradicating degenerative disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The people opposing this bill are the same type of people who opposed the experimentation which lead to the eradication of small pox which has since saved millions of lives.

Are you going to pretend that there is a rational reason for this, or just accept it is an illogical feeling? (fine if it's the latter, everyone has them.)

Just a heads up before everybody flips out, altered human embryos for scientific research are not allowed to be kept beyond 14 days, and are also not allowed to be implanted in the womb. You're not gonna be seeing any man-cows just yet.

They're not actually growing live animals here. That's what the news never seems to explain to people. They try to manipulate it into mad scientists trying to mess with nature and create horrific animal/human crossovers when in actual fact they're simply experimenting with CELLS, individuals cells, to research into the curing of diseases.

I'm happy that the Government had the sense to pass this bill. It could save lives in the future and will ensure that the UK becomes one of the promenant countries for research of this kind.

Forgive me if I'm a little put off by crossing human and animal DNA into an embryo that will be used as a mere test and killed after 14 days.

The miracle cures being put out for this sound remarkably like the ones put out for embryonic stem cell research. . . .and we all know how that one turned out.

That's why it's called research. To see if it can be used to cure serious diseases.

it's the same as embryonic stem cell research everyone thinks it will be some kind of miracle cure that will cure everything from AIDs to Alzheimers, well Ponce De Leon, i got news the fountain of youth doesn't exist. And haven't adult stem cells been more successful than embryonic ones, and what about Amniotic stem cells, or that thing discovered in november that can make skin cells just as usable as stem cells.

Just because we aren't seeing the benefits yet doesn't mean there aren't any. Medical research is a long long long process.

First, we are not crossing animal and human DNA. All the DNA in the cells is human, but the cytoplasm (and specifically the ribosomes that assemble the proteins encoded by the DNA) are animal. The ball of cells isn't even considered an embryo and is not viable, so isn't alive even by your definition ( presumably that it has potential life) and so cannot be killed. And secondly it is still early days for stem cell research, I rather think you are jumping the gun in claiming that it will not produce a useful advancement. They said the same about Faraday's experiments, and just look at what they lead to.

It sounds cool and freaky at the same time.

I hope the scientists will be able to draw the line in the future when the results starts looking less and less like an animal and more and more like a primate... or human.

I hope they're able to draw a line somewhere if the research results in intelligent creatures suffering from severe pain and extreme body malformities.

I hope they don't stick to this "the ends justify the means" - motto all the way through.

You might not know but Mary Shelly (author of Frankenstein) was a christian and the book is more about parents not looking after their chldren.

The only part that will be passed on that is still animal is the Mitrocondrial DNA, the only thing this does is respiration. This by itself could cure mitrochondrial diseases.

Anyway this is just for reasearch, these will never grow up in to actual people.

I love it. Everytime something pertaining to stem-cell research comes up the church throws a fit.

Why don't they just shut-up and stop trying to hold society for God's sake. It is nothing but shear ignorance that has these people oppossing the research and it amazes me how viciously they fight it without having any damn understanding of what it entails.....

You don't have a clue about Britian at all

Christianity is not as big here as in America.

43% of the Uk declare themselves as athiest.

Only 3% of UK citizens attend church reguarly.

More poeple are present in Saturday and Sunday morning watching in person football/ soccor than in the church pews on a Sunday morning.

BTW theres also a British law wherby your religious beliefs are not aloud to affect your vote in parliment which is why Tony Blair had to denounce his faith when he became Prime Minister.

So this may be shock horror to the deeply angligan Americans but us Brits would rather see scientific discovery.

Well said. People need to do a bit more research before jumping to conclusions about what us Brits are up to. We're trying to cure diseases by using some cells and and everyone goes mental saying it's wrong. Crazy...

Just because SOME Americans are religous doesn't mean a thing, many Christians I know are pro-stem cell research and aren't going to go crazy over an embryo.
