Isn't 'United Kingdom' actually short for 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Nothern Ireland'? So therefore UK and GB aren't the same thing, necessarily.
The Formal name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The UK is made up of four home nations or constituent countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. These home nations are not independent countries they were once all ruled from Westminster but now have devolved Parliaments with their own First Ministers, with the Exception of England.

The whole four countries are collectively referred to as "The United Kingdom" or "reat Britain" England is one of the four countries, as well as Scotland (WIN), Wales and Northern Ireland. England is not the whole place just one of them.
England was officialy a seperate nation from 927AD untill 1707 with the signing of the act of Union which created the The Kingdom of Great Britain. The Kingdom of Great Britainlasted from 1st May 1707 untill Dec 31st 1800.
In 1801 the formal name changed to United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, this remained for next 121 years untill 6th December 1922 when the twenty-six Southern Ireland counties seceded from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and formed the autonomous Irish Free State. The six counties forming Northern Ireland remained in the United Kingdom.
Thereafter, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland continued in name until 1927 when it was renamed as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland by the Royal and Parliamentary Titles Act 1927.
The Irish Free State was renamed Éire (Republic of Ireland)in 1937 when Éamon de Valera changed the Irish constitution thus breaking ties with the UK and the British Monarchy.
In Northern Ireland, we define the UK as Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales together. Great Britain is all of them except Northern Ireland. So yes, to answer your question as a Northern Irish guy: We call England, England. ;)

I dont consider my self living in "Great Britain" or the "United Kingdom"
I live in Northern Ireland, and the reason why the majority of the population of this small country don't just live under Irish law is because they where born here and have lived here all their life.
Dont think you would like it too much if someone said "Right you country doesn't exist anymore.. listen to them ones now"
