You know, after 37 years on this planet, I've realised one thing: people bullshit. A lot.

It's not even the kind of bullshit that would matter, like trying to bullshit your way into a girls pants or something. No, this is a constant stream of crap coming out of peoples mouths, about just about anything. Science, politics, history, personal stories, etc.  And I'm not talking about embellishing for a good tale, either, I'm talking straight-up bullshit.

The thing is, anyone even remotely self-aware should be able to see right through the bullshit, and I'm willing to bet most people do. When someone tells you the same story a dozen different ways with a dozen different outcomes a dozen times, that's obvious bullshit. And then there's the obvious bullshit where people have to keep pausing mid-speech to make shit up as they go.

And then people respond with more bullshit. I know they know they're being bullshitted, it's obvious, but then they turn around and pull the same bullshit like they're any less obvious. It's not even a matter of one-upping the other guy, it seems people just make bullshit up just to have something to talk about. And it's not like it's a rare occurrence: most of the time people open their mouths, bullshit follows.

And then you get someone actually trying to start an intelligent conversation and no one is interested because it's over their heads. Or you get the odd guy who doesn't mind not knowing what he's talking about and starts throwing around terms related to the topic in ways that makes it even more obvious he's just bullshitting. "Yeah I upgraded my RAM so my CPU PSU is 10 Megavoltrons now." Hunh.

Dag dang I love my friends: the few people on Earth I can sit with and come away from a conversation enlightened about something. I don't have to worry about dodging bullshit because they're quite honest about what they don't know and won't pretend to. These are people I tell things I would never tell my mother, because I know they not only listen, they contemplate and then suggest. Honestly.

With good intelligent friends, and knowing how close not bullshitting each other has allowed us to become, it makes me wonder if we aren't fvcking genuises in a world of idiots. I don't honestly believe that, but everytime I set foot outside my door, the circumstantial evidence piles up.

Do most people not realize they're obvious bullshiters? Do they realize when they're being bullshitted? Do they just not care, and it's all just down to routine?

It's bullshit.

Bullshit.

For your sake I should hope this isn't the case. That would imply that you could be just as much of a bull$h*tter as them, only you don't realize it.

I may mis-state a fact here or there but I don't make shit up just to have something to talk about. There's enough interesting things I've come across in my years that I'm never short of something to talk about, from straight-up 'this shit happened' to 'have you ever wondered'.

Yeah you might hear the same story from me twice, but at least it's the same story both times.

Sometimes I might tell a life story to friends, and they make think I'm "bullshitting" - but I'm not.

Like I might use the words "dad" or "step dad" interchangeably, or I might forget the name of the place the situation happened at that I wanted to share, but - doesn't mean I'm bullshitting.

Yeah you might hear the same story from me twice, but at least it's the same story both times.

I have no idea what provoked that rant of yours, so maybe the person in question really is just a huge bull$h*tter. But in general I don't find that most people are habitually making up $hit just to have something to talk about. Sometimes, like you said, people just get their facts wrong. They're spouting bull$hit but it's not intentional because they truly think that what they're saying is true. Other times, people may embellish or exaggerate for effect. Depending on the specific situation there very well may be nothing wrong with that. Especially in the case of someone repeating an entertaining anecdote, I find it to be okay. If the entire purpose is to entertain, then I see nothing wrong with trying out variations on the story until finding a version that hits well. And then there's also the fact that memory isn't very reliable. How people actually remember an event can change over time. And yes, there are other cases where people are just straight up lying. But it's usually not something that I think is a big deal. How would I even be able to properly assess that it's bull$hit anyway? If I recognize it as BS, how do I know what's going on? How am I supposed to know if it's a harmless embellishment, a total deliberate lie, a misunderstanding of the facts, or due to faulty memory? How would I even know that it's BS at all? It's entirely possible that they're right and I'm just wrong. After all, if I can accept that they're spouting off BS without realizing it, then what's stopping ME from being full of BS and just not realizing it? But like I said, your rant seemed like it was based on some incident and I clearly have no way of knowing what's going on there. But are MOST people bull$hitters? Probably, but I doubt that most people do it really often or are particularly deliberate about it. In any case, I'm certainly hesitant to believe that I'm less of a bull$hitter than most people, because how would I even know?

I dunno, it seems pretty deliberate to me.

The most obvious cases seem to be those people who have nothing going on in their lives because they've never exerted any effort, so they just make shit up to make it seem like they don't sit around on their butthole 24/7. What's great is when they start in on a story, someone integral to their story shows up and suddenly it's either dropped or "no wait, it wasn't Devon, it was Steve I was with...that's right...it was Steve. I remember now."

Umm...yeah. Sure you do.

Yeah I can understand that. I have some weird issues with my neighbors like that, though it isn't as friendly.

I bought this house from my best friend. He and his wife were having a long feud with the neighbors across the street before they moved. Now that fued seems to have transferred over to me and them (though it is entirely one-sided... I barely recognize their existence).

I've been told now by those who talk to them that I am a crook and spent time in prison (false of course), that I embezzled money from a software company (I think they must have heard I worked for a software company at some point), that my best friend's wife is cheating on him with me, that he is in fact cheating on his wife ... again with me, that I am a Moslem, and that they have seen me spying on my neighbors' houses and think I might be a cop or a pervert (depending on who they tell the story to). Oh, and apparently I sexually assaulted my next door neighbor's dog... I am not easy to shock but that one shocked me by its audacity.

It's really getting bad and I am not sure what else they are going to say. It seems so silly since I don't really know or care about them and have never given them grief. I could really care less what went on between them and my buddy's family.

To give a little history, my best friend and his wife had to actually serve them papers for both libel and defamation for doing this kind of nonsense before orally to the neighbors and written on the neighborhood's online messaging board. Apparently the neighbor started calling his wife's place of work and claiming that she was stealing art from the company and bringing it home, motivating them to treat these as serious accusations in need of court attention rather than just stupid asinine BS from neighbors. Those papers effectively stopped it while they were living here here. I am wondering at this point if I need to do the same thing to put a stop to this nonsense.

I also have this neighbor two doors down who seems to be terrified of disagreeing with me. He'll tell a story one minute and after I've heard it I'll tell him why I disagree with his conclusions. Then a few minutes later he's retelling it to someone else, only my conclusions are now his... right in my presence he'll do this. It's so seamless he doesn't even seem to realize it.

Umm...yeah. Sure you do.

I'm not talking specific examples, I'm just talking about people in general. I'm not denying that some people are just extraordinarily huge bull$hitters. But stating that MOST people are spectacularly huge bull$hitters is kind of a dangerous idea. I just find it way too implausible that most people see themselves as being totally full of BS. Which mean that if they're constantly spewing huge mounds of BS, that at least a large part of the time they don't realize that they're doing it. They see themselves as (mostly) honest, but they're simply wrong because of a pretty low level of self-awareness. So...what qualifies ME to state that I have a higher level of self-awareness than them? Is there a certificate I can get for that? Can I get a degree in self-awareness? See, there's this thing where people tend to overestimate their competence in different areas. People don't tend to think they're dumber than average, they tend to think that they're smarter than average. Studies show that employees in various fields constantly overestimate how competent they are at their jobs. How much of a bull$hitter am I? Well, it's safe to assume that I'm about as much of a bull$hitter as the "average" guy. If there's some minority of people who are honest and don't spout off Bull$hit, then chances are that I'm NOT in that minority simply due to the fact that it is a small minority. If I think that I'm in a select minority of people who are honest and don't spout off bull$hit, then chances are that that implies a LACK of honesty and self-awareness.

m0zart

If you are going to continue living there, you should certainly do so.

My neighbors are just hicks. I'm not being rude, they'll tell you that straight up. Rednecks to the bone. They aren't skinheads, but they want no personal relationships with 'other people', though they tolerate them in public and business otherwise.

They're also dumb as bricks.

This was honestly said once upon a time: "tell me again how the stars are different cause the world spins around the moon or whatever" referring to a previous conversation we had about why the stars differ with the seasons, which I brought up when he asked where Jupiter was on that previous night, as I had pointed Jupiter out earlier in the year when he pointed to Jupiter and said "that there's been hanging up there all night, looks like one of them secret helicopters."

Maybe to some people my neighbors would be a fvcking riot, and in small doses, perhaps they would be. But this is every day.

And it's not like I just jump in to correct their mistakes. I'm quite content to listen to them yammer to each other so I don't have to think of something polite to say. But no...they ask questions.

They knock on my door and ask me stupid shit. "If I'm only using half a can, how much butter do I need?"

And did you see that? That mark between can and how above? It's a coma.

Some bullshitters are amazing to talk to. One technician I worked with told me a bunch of stories and I knew half of what he was saying wasn't true. Doesn't make his  story less interesting.

Most people are fools who are more concerned with creating the impression that they are knowledgeable than actually being knowledgeable. Most people talk without having any understanding of what they are talking about. It is a manifestation of the absence of ego as a primary, where the person is only aware of his identity as a reflection - his world-view is dominated by his perception of the perceptions of others.

This is actually pretty true. When I was younger I was amazed at how much so many adults "knew." Took me a while until I realized that half of what a lot of people talk about they don't really understand. That's why I have mad respect for the engineer I worked for. He didn't talk much unless necessary for the job and when I asked him questions he would just immediately know the answer.

I've found that generally the people who actually know a lot don't go around bragging about it.

You know where you can find the most bullshit? Student reports and exams. I see it every year, and I get scientific lab reports and exams, and have to read paragraphs full of material that has nothing to do with the question.
