Bye bye TikTok. It was fun while it lasted...for content creators that is...

Maybe the ban is a good thing, but the way Congress went about it is extremely problematic if you ask me. The ban does nothing to stop private companies from acquiring the same information and privately selling it to Chinese companies. But either way, I don't care for TikTok at all and it's too silly for me. Anyone really cares about TikTok?

But yeah, no matter how you look at this, this is an actual case of government censorship. Which is deeply ironic.

I'm going to miss it. My algorithm was gaming, bushcraft, stand up comics, and news that isn't covered by corporate news outlets (which is a big reason why the government wants it gone, because they can't control the narrative.) And it's a massive government overreach.

The funny thing though, is Rednote. It's the top media app in the US from app stores and it's an actual Chinese app. People across the country are voluntarily downloading a Chinese media app in droves because there's really no difference between a Chinese app having your data, and an American one. Two sides to the same coin.

This is wonderful news. The internet used to be such an interesting place where you had so much agency. It was bad enough it turned to walled gardens, but TikTok is even worse in terms of agency than the rest.

It's just a hearing and isn't set in stone yet, so let's see what happens first. Either way, I really don't care.

Don't care either way, on one hand it's censorship/anti free market place. On the other hand.. there are nurses and doctors twerking in doctors offices during covid for followers. And teenagers making robot noises pretending to be robots for money.

Maybe some bans are ok.

….amongst social media, I think it was a good app. You can watch people do stupid/silly things. Sometimes you’d get a chuckle out of me.

I won’t miss the app, however. Social media….me no like.

This short attention span social media trend is cancer to the mind and society. Sooner it disappears the better.

Social media will go down in history as one of humanity's great mistakes. Seeing one go down brings a smile to my face.

But it's a bittersweet smile. I want to see it collapse under its own weight, not disemboweled by a bunch of dumb politicians.

Yes, it's government censorship. But that's the problem of America and its failing and outdated political system, not mine.

Well I hate to take something away from people that enjoy it, but I'm also not sad to see a social media apparatus disappear. These things cause more harm to kids and teens than drugs, legal and illegal, ever have.

Would have been better to see people actually ask for this, as you said, but a win is a win.

While this sentiment is at it's lowest point, you could make the argument that government is an extension of the will of the people and this is what people wanted...but that's pretty week.

The whole point of the TikTok ban was to restrict Chinese influence on America... only for the very opposite to happen. Now American TikTok "refugees" are flooding a Chinese app called RedNote that is very similar to TikTok. But unlike TikTok which had separate networks for Chinese and non-Chinese users, RedNote has a shared network for all users. Up until now, RedNote was almost exclusively for Chinese users, but now it's being flooded with new American "refugees" from TikTok... who are now watching Chinese content on RedNote, which defeats the whole purpose of the TikTok ban in the first place.

I wish it also included instagram....shitty site. I don't do social media yet my younger brother loves to send me instagram links to stupid stuff he thinks I'd like.

These teens are about to experience a lot of frustration just to prove a point.

That is my position too. I would have loved to see Tiktok collapse. But not by government action. But by people wisening up.

Also content that could be perceived as negative by the Chinese nationalists or ethno-nationalists.

Also anything that could go against traditional culture or respect for authority, the police, the army.

Or content that is perceived as distorting the history of China or that introduced non approved supernatural elements to the history and culture of china.

Things that glorify Japan, western culture, Christianity, Islam, homosexuality, feminism, transexualism.

Any content that shows a map that doesn't correspond with the territorial claims of china.

Content that refers to Taiwan as a country or that implies it.

It's very wide and I am sure I am missing things, but you get the idea.

Never used it, wouldn't mind if all social media sites disappeared

YouTube Shorts is about to get really busy.

I use Threads over Instagram. I find Threads to be more of a chilled social media place than it is for X. But yeah, Instagram totally sucks.

I'm shocked most of those refugees aren't going to YouTube Shorts since Shorts was a direct competition to TikTok.

The Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the ban.

The amount of backlash was just too much for Congress. Everyone wants to be a Patriot and this is the result of backing down.

If Trump immediately backs down or compromises his position, he's going to look quite weak.

Eh, sounds about right to me.

You need to understand that Trump only deals in the narrowest possible self-interest, with a particular emphasis on short-term gains and PR wins. He has no long term plans for anything. I saw this back in 2018 with North Korea, then again very recently with Israel.

Well, all I can say is "everything is for sale" certainly seemed to have been the thinking behind his 2020 peace plan, which I immediately called DOA when the first phase was unveiled. I don't think he understands or cares what the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is really about, and why it's been going for so long with no end in sight.

I'm sad to see it go. It was shaping up to be one of my favorite apps. Though now, I'm on RedNote, Bluesky, X, and Fanbase. RedNote, I'll have to get used to. And I'm hoping to move from X in a few months. The issue is... I have so many good bookmarks that I don't want to lose.

I’ve never used it but have always been annoyed by people in social settings scrolling through it like a mindless zombie while I try to have a conversation. I’m in Canada so it doesn’t affect us yet but glad to see it getting banned somewhere.

I guess some people might have to actually get a job beyond that of a "content creator."

It's not what many people here will want to hear, but good riddance.
