Fuelled by hot weather and dense, dry brush, the blaze is threatening 12,000 buildings and key communications masts.

Two firefighters were killed on Sunday after their vehicle was overrun by flames and rolled down a mountainside.

Some 6,600 homes are under mandatory evacuation orders. State Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger described the blazes as "still totally out of control".

The fires also threaten communication towers housing transmitters for all Los Angeles' major TV stations.

Mount Wilson, where the towers are located - near the city of Pasadena - is also home to a historic solar observatory.

I know how serious these can be first hand. My entire neighborhood and surrounding ones looked like they were carpet bombed after the SD fires two years ago. :?

Yes, these are a major disaster in the making. BUT I have a hard time finding sympathy for the people that live there...they know it is part of living there, it happens almost every year (not this extent mind you). It is like me complaining about a Tornado (I live in Texas) or people along the gulf complaining about a hurricaine...it is just part of where you chhose to live.

The fires happen every year, people should know the dangers already.

You would think a civilization capable of space travel could figure out some way to establish permanent workable firebreaks as a sort of preemptive maintenance against the spread of these fires.

As someone who was living in rural Victoria, Australia when the massive bush-fires were burning last year I hope you all the best.

This is why I love North Carolina. I live in the central part of NC and the worst we ever get is a really bad thunderstorm that knocks over some trees or something. Best of luck to those living in Cali.

Alter_Echo

The fact that we are capable of space travel has nothing to do with our capability to control fires.

No. It does have the same relation to our ability to defeat obstacles through engineering though. I cant imagine it being more difficult to figure out a preventative measure for these fires than it was to get into space.

I say we just let LA burn. Is there anything there really worth saving? (the answer is 'no' by the way)

it's a wildfire, happens in nature. not a treat. dead old trees dries up and catches fire. everything is burnt down to make room for new life to grow. better for nature. but not for civilization. note: these are wildfires, not to be confused with man-made fires.

Its like treating cancer with chemotherapy. Yes, the medicine sucks but you have the chance of getting rid of the cancer.
