Is it possible for people with polar opposite political and religious views to be friends? I'm not talking about a Buddhist and Christian(since quite a few will argue that they are diametrically opposite religions). For example, can an Agnostic who thinks that George W. Bush was an excellent president and a Muslim(irregardless of religion in this case) that thinks that George W. Bush was a terrorist become close friends? Ignoring the subject they disagree about, and talking about common interests and what made them become friends in the first place MIGHT be possible(since the average person cannot tell another's religious or political views upfront in a bar or when they first meet). However, after thinking for awhile, I began to wonder if that is possible since every once in awhile, the topic WILL arise. When that does happen, everything in common is forgotten, and the only goal is to attempt to prove the other person wrong(I'm talking in the situation where neither will be willing to agree with the other). If you ask me, how did that friendship even continue if they hate each other this much: They don't. In fact, it probably could come from many factors such as subconscious bonding from either too many movies together, same interests and possibly even siblings(yes, with different religious and political views). So what do you think? Being friends in the first place is possible, and being close friends is possible too(prior to learning the opposite party's stance), but will they be able to remain GENUINE friends?

In my experience, yup. I'm Catholic, but still open-minded towards people of different theologies and actually find it an interesting aspect of people. Also, one of my good friends is a satanist, it's just a matter of not letting differences get in between the people.

Yes, I have several friends with strong opposition to my political views. But if you're really true friends, it doesn't get in the way.

I wouldn't be friends or even associate with anyone that thinks GW was a terrorist. With that for the most part yes. I have friends who are liberal and I couldn't care less.

Yes, as long as you agree not to discuss the issues you disagree on and are unwilling to move from.

Most of my 'romantic' relationships were effected in a negative way because "they didn't want us to die and not be together in heaven". I've always had people attacking me for not being christian, even teachers when I was at school - calling me a devil, insulting my beliefs, etc. Anyways, I've grown a hate of religion/Christianity.. I still talk to religious people, but I hate their religion.

Yes. I live in Israel, and about 90% of the population here are religious. And a good partof those are hardcore-religious.There's a guy in my class who's seriously religious, and he's a good friend of mine. I myself somewhere between an atheist an agnistic. It's complicated..

I didn't mean that it didn't count, what I mean was that it wasn't "opposite" enough if you get what I mean. Getting a Christian and an Agnostic/Buddhist to agree on a supernatural being is easier than getting a Muslim to agree that God's name is not Allah or what not.

Absolutely, as long as you are both intelligent and not ruled by emotion. One of my best friends was completely different from me socially and politically, but we still had common ground on movies, music, philosophy. You can be friends with just about anyone if you are open to it.

I'm an Atheist and my best friend is a Christian. We debate all the time, but still remain great friends. Unless two people are close-minded, I don't see why two people couldn't remain friends with different view points.

It depends on in what priority have those said people set those beliefs.

In my case if I encountered such a person it wouldnt matter cause all I care about are people's attitudes and respect.

Yes. I have a friend who is jewish and a liberal while I have no religion and am conservative. I don't know that we are exact opposites, but it is pretty close. We don't talk about religion because that is a very personal thing. We do talk about politics, though, but just because we disagree about that doesn't mean that we are doomed to hate each other. Why should I care what another person thinks as long as they aren't suppressing me while doing it.

Considering I like in the Bible Belt, and I'm agnostic and liberal, not in the sense of beign aleft wing nut, but open-minded, I'm the odd one of my bunch. I get along great with my friends. I just keept opinions of religion and/or politics out of fun... especially when alcohol is involved.

Yes I'm pretty sure that some of my good friends are atheists. Which is sad though because I would love to hang out with them in Heaven :(. BTW Darth-Caedus and tzar are a good example although we're just friends here. When we die I will be in Heaven and they two will be in Valhalla*cough*hell*cough so no more talking about metalz between us :(..

hell he even makes jokes of it saying "you better shut up before i republipunch you." or if we go to the movies he takes the seat i want and says "REPUBLICLAIM!" :p

We can also get in huge political debates and still be great freinds

Yeah definitely. I don't talk politics really with friends or family unless I know they agree with me. Either way religion and politics is usually a topic to not talk about especially if you know they have different opinions. If you know someone has opposite views then just focus on hanging out, having fun, being there for each other and not even worry or talk politics or religion.

I thought the TC was just using that as an extreme example.

Are there people that actually believe Bush was a terrorist, at least as defined by webster?
