A typical motherboard can support 8gb with some allowing 16gb but 4gb is the usuall top as 2gb modules can be hard to get hold of (standard motherboards have 4 RAM slots).
Though a 32bit OS can only manage 4gb as it uses a 32bit long number to identify where each byte of data is stored. A 6 bit OS allows much more but there are compatibility issues with older programs. This applies to all memory including RAM,VRAM and cache

I think that DDR2 memory is limited to 1GB modules if i'm not mistaken, so for DDR2 the limit is 4GB (1GB x 4 slots = 4GB). It might be 2GB though i'm not sure (which would be 8GB).

Depends what you run and what uses the RAM. If you mean memory in total then that is not enough for high end gaming, 2.5gb is about the minimum with higher recomended if you want top graphical settings.
All these 4gb systems have appeard because DDR2 is so cheap, these PCs are also holding videocards that claim "up to 1gb memory" though this is takenfrom the central RAM so it's really slow.

Yes. :D Now, let's talk about PCs with more than one processor. *drool*I think that DDR2 memory is limited to 1GB modules if i'm not mistaken, so for DDR2 the limit is 4GB (1GB x 4 slots = 4GB). It might be 2GB though i'm not sure (which would be 8GB).
The new DDR3 will support higher GB per module though.

true.. they're not socket compatible. and i was using dimm as a generic definition not specifically to the DDR2 JEDEC standard. :)
