Hey guys. I have always loved to write (currently working on my first "official" book) Always enjoyed playing videogames and thought that I had some pretty good ideas for some RPG elemented action/adventure games. Problem is, I never learned how to do all that computer programming stuff..therefore I have no idea how to actually CREATE a videogame. Is there such a job as to where I come up with the whole story and just direct a team of people to do what needs to be done? If there is, that is exactly what I would want to be. Is there anyone here that can help me out?? Thanks!

Don't creative directors do that? I'm sure there are positions like you describe, but I don't know what they'd be called.

Yes. You could independently write short stories or novels for publishing companies. Script Writing, Ghost writing is also there. As for games, story boards, story developement and plot is crucial for many games. I suggest you attend at least an art school for creative minds

Okay, thanks for all the replies. I mean, I knew that I could write a story and send it into a company in hopes of getting them to make it, I just wasn't sure if there was a specific job title for this. So, if this were to be my main job, do you think id have to know anything about actually programming and knowing the whole "computer language"?

Games have writers, but they don't exactly tell anybody what to do as far as design goes. There's a whole nother group of teams for that.

If you're serious about this track down some writers for games you like, and ask them a few questions on how game writing is unique, and ask for tips and mentor type stuff. Eventually you can develop a professional relationship w/ them.

Also more and more games are being novolized. Halo, Mass Effect, and Wow are fairly popular books.

don't send anything to a game company in hopes they'll use your idea. It'll basically get trashed before anybody reads it. The only way a game company can use your idea is if you're already working for them. Everything else is ignored due to legal red tape. I wouldn't worry about learning a "computer language", but become familiar w/ the development process for games.

Thanks for creating this thread; I sometimes think of this as something I may want to do if possible. My advice would be to write small works and use the Internet to your advantage in building a strong resume. Perhaps you can start something more modest like writing for a short film or something.

It's already a career buddy, it's called Game Designing. No computer skills required, they hire people to write storylines and scripts for video games.

You can try XNA Game Studios to make a indie game if you have a xbox 360

Don't believe you need to know if you want to design the storyline, all you need to do is write up the back story or something and the programmers make it happen.
