I'm going to send a project that I am doing on Microsoft Word to my friend's Mac. Will it be able to open?

He's absolutely correct. All word applications are cross platforms between mac and PC. I work at a help desk that deals with this day in and day out... Just make sure you are saving it as DOC and not DOCX, use the Save As option to do this.

If he's got Word. Also, if you've got Office 2007, documents will not perfectly transfer over to Office 2008 (the newest Mac edition) if you save them in newest format (i.e. .docx). Save them as simply .doc, and you won't have a problem.

Do they have to have the Word software to open it? Or can it open on whatever software Mac uses for these similar files?

It might be openable on a Mac program called Preview, even without Word. But he won't be able to edit it or do anything besides read it.

New word format like docx is sucks and this format can't be opened on the previous versions of MS word like the xp/2003 version. The standard doc format is the best option.

I suggest saving it as a doc file. If he/she has MS Office for Mac then they will be able to open it. If they don't have MS Office, they can use the free OpenOffice.org suite of applications.

If he has iWorks he can open .doc files, if he doesn't I'm sure he has some sort of office suite like Open Office which still can read .doc files.

I would suggest Google Documents for any projects that involve collaboration among multiple computers and people. Especially projects with multiple files. Another plus is that the files can be edited from any computer with Internet whether it be Windows, Mac, Linux...
