That is a good question. I'd say they can't swim.

i think they can. in resident evil 4 u saw a lot of zombies swimming. i think it depends on the director of the game. there are a lot of different zombies in video games and movies. In dead rising the zombie's eyes turn red while other zombies in a game don't have red eyes.

Zombies don't seem very buoyant. I guess they could walk across the bottom, like they did in Land of The Dead.

Yeah i'd imagine them doing that with their lack for the need for oxygen. :|

I'm guessing he was on a boat and got dumped overboard. Plus, this zombie seems to be hungry enough to go for sushi.

I assume that if a zombie tried to walk underwater the pressure from the extreme depths would simply kill them, which could be one reason islands could not really be attacked during the Zombie apocalypse.

Zombies are probably very buoyant, especially older ones who have little mass left to them. The only way I can see them walking under water is if they absorb water like a sponge which is very possible.

Max Brooks, leading zombie expert of the universe, said that zombies sink. So if you try to escape the zombie apocalypse by going to a deserted island, YOU ARE NOT SAFE. A zombie will probably walk up to the beach and eat your brains. Being in a high place is always best when trying to survive...

What do you mean, "little mass"? Like, their flesh is falling off? If anything, they'd sink more, because then there's nothing but a skeleton, and (correct me if I'm wrong) bones sink.

Actually, if you pay close attention to the back story of RE4, they're still partially human, having been affected by a wholly different virus strain, so they're not actually zombies. But back onto the subject, I'd say no, they lost too much intelligence when they became undead. However, seeing as they can function without many of the (used to be) vital organs, they obviously don't need to breathe, so they could just as easily walk on the water's floor.

But they're not complete skeletons yet, they have many spots where gas can build up and where air pockets can form.

Well yes, that's why zombies in other continents aren't mentioned in the movies. But of course they sink! We do too unless we use our quick muscle movements (which zombies lack) or inhale deeply before entering water (and not too many zombies would have much luck with the filling the lungs with air thing).

i guess it all depends on what kind of zombies they are. it seems like there are the stupid slow zombies (dawn of the dead, land of the dead), then there are the smarter faster ones that are more like animals.

some zombies in games/movies cant even run (resident evil). then there are movies like 28Days/weeks and games like Left4Dead. swimming wouldnt be too hard for the 2nd kind.

Lto_thaG

I can't speak on the buoyancy of zombies, but it does seem that they cannot swim and would have to walk at the bottom of the body of water, a la the river in Land of the Dead. That being said, no, they wouldn't be able walk across the bottom of the ocean due to the pressure. That is, unless they have incredible, super human strength and extra crush-resistant corpses.

They're zombies. They can take 213456789 bullets if none of them hit thier head, And they rip limbs off. They must be super strong.

Short answer is yes zombies can swim.

Now to clear everything else up.

Floating: Some people float, some don't. Quite a few dead bodies float. Now one would assume that depending on the type of zombie outbreak there are going to be some zombies, and float and some that sink. Now when it comes to deep oceans we'd see bodies floating at different depths depending on the body.

Islands: Just because zombies can swim doesn't mean they will be able to make it to your island. They will not be able to over power any currents, and most likely won't survive getting to a fairly remote island (assuming they are about the same as a regular corpse). The farther out the island is the better chance it probably has of being safe (assuming the current doesn't drop them off). Even though they can swim, or even walk the ocean isn't going to be an easy trek, and they are going to move even slower than they do on land.

It depends on what type of Zombies you're talking about, there's the Zombies that are pretty human still (like RE zombies), or ones that have lost their humanity (Dead Rising) I would think that some of the Humanish zombies can swim, but none of the shamblers can (they can't even run). I would imagine if you think of Left 4 Dead Zombies there could be some that develop the ability to swim...
