Yeah, Canada's pretty cool. 9th on my list of "Places I'd rather be."

New Zealand's still my number 1, though.

I wish I could travel to Vancouver I really fell in love with the place after looking up tv and movie filming locations there's so many things to do there and so much beautiful scenery but damn it's pricey.

Canada is a giant oil refinery, logging, and heavy industry conglomerate ruled by corporate oligarchy that we give a free pass to because they act as this bastion of progressive policies, namely socialized healthcare.

But they have their own skeletons in their closet and bad shit, too; oppression of indigenous peoples, hypocritical politicians, war, and so on. It's like a miniature USA, only they treat their own citizens better and there's some French stuff!

With that said, it seems like a pretty great place. Fewer people, colder temperatures, lots of forests...etc.

Just don't put it on a pedestal; people in general are terrible, and Canada has people.

Too rainy during the winter. Toronto has a better overall climate and better infrastructure.

@girlusocrazy: Are you drunk? Canada has some of the very best restaurants in the world. Fast food in Quebec alone shit’s all over any other place. American restaurants are very cheap, but good,as most food is much cheaper in the U.S. Canada’s food in general is freaking expensive anyplace you go. Don’t know too much about England,Ireland,Scotland, etc ....

Canada is overrated. Especially by Americans. Quebec is pretty cool. But everything is about Canada is lame.

It's a bit too close to the worst country in the world.

Quebec isn't bad at all,it's a great place. The biggest bs going on their is the language bs. Lived there for years and was happy years for me. There is good/bad anywhere you'll live, but in Canada,Quebec is the jewel of this country.

An interesting thread. Many misconceptions. I'll just bullet point a bunch of stuff:

  • No, the entirety of Canada is not covered in snow. It didn't even snow in Vancouver this Winter, and typically doesn't.
  • Gun violence is minimal.
  • We have universal healthcare. Some Canadians complain, but I lived in San Diego, and the cost/simplicity of universal healthcare as a system, is much better.
  • No, the indigenous are not oppressed, and haven't been in decades. Complete federal funding (with no audits, which if you ask me is the problem), protected reserve land with much of it being in amazing locations, incredible income tax breaks, and reserved seating in every faculty in every university.
  • Quebec thinks it's Europe. Makes it unique and an interesting visit. But no, it is not the "crown jewel" of Canada. Most Canadians would disagree with that.
  • Americans do romanticize Canada, but in my experience, really know nothing about Canada.
  • Canada can be one of if not the most expensive country to live in, depending on where you live. Vancouver and Toronto are more equal to or more expensive than San Francisco (as an American comparison). But Calgary, Winnipeg, etc. are less than half of the cost on all the same factors. It would be like saying living in Dallas vs San Fran. The dollar goes further off of the coast.
  • No, Canadian food doesn't suck. That line sounds stupid. Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal have some of the best restaurants in the world, and diverse at that. Relegating it to, "Tim Horton's food sucks" is like saying, hey, I want a gourmet burger from Jack in the Box.
  • No, the rest of Canada outside of Quebec is not "lame." I don't even know what that's based on. I pulled this link for you off of Tourism Vancouver's website as an example: https://www.tourismvancouver.com/media/corporate-communications/vancouvers-awards-and-accolades/#:~:text=The%20city%20placed%2032nd%20in%20the%20world.&text=In%20Travel%20%2B%20Leisure's%20annual%20%22World's,of%20top%20cities%20in%20Canada.&text=Vancouver%20ranked%20No.,Top%2010%20Destinations%20in%20Canada.
  • It is not a "miniature USA". It never was. The differences are noticeable. I lived in both.

It is the best country? If I'm looking at safety, quality of life, income range, things to do... I would say it's up there.

But it all depends on what you want. As I've gotten older I'm less about caring about causes and more about worrying about myself/family. On that sense, Canada has high income taxes. Certain provinces (like states) have less income tax. Either way, you get booted. And there's too much unnecessary red tape in a city.

I do miss California weather though.

I live here so I am biased. It is up there in pretty much all quality of life indicators, but I think anything top 10 is probably more personal preference as to the order.

But I am retiring soon and we will relocate somewhere else on the globe that is warmer than here. No snow for me. And for my Vancouver friends, if I wanted 6 months of dreary, wet and overcast skies I'd move to the UK....which is also out. We are currently looking at property/locations around the Mediterranean.
