I swear everytime I go to the gas station now and then to get pop or a cheap Hot Stuff mini pizza, there will always be 3 old geezers that are farmers they sit and chat and drink coffee at a corner table. Then the other day the same old geezers they were freakin standing the middle of the aisle where I was trying to get a bag of chips.

I hope i dont end up doing that sort of thing when i become an old fart

At least they still have friends. It'd better to be one of the old farts sitting at a corner table conversing with other old farts, than to end up as a lonely old fart who has to spend the last years of his life ignored and hated by everyone.

That sounds like small town, North Dakota to me. Whenever I go on little road trips around the state (or into Minnesota) and stop in gas stations in small towns, I notice this phenomenon. Farms aren't generally social hubs. Those old guys just go hang out to talk. There's nothing wrong with it. Their kids are all grown and gone and their wives are about the only other people they see on a regular basis. I think it's great when older people can get out and still enjoy themselves. Maybe they have no interest in drinking, so why would they go to a bar if they just want coffee? They just want to sit and chat and enjoy themselves. If it's that big of a deal to you, find a new gas station to get food at. And really if they're in your way, say "excuse me" and slip past. If you're a polite individual, they'll remember you, and they'll move when they see you coming. They might even buy your food for you if you're a respectful person. Old people do that.

Say "Excuse me." They'll move. I can think of many more annoying behaviors than those exhibited by these farmers.

This pretty much, although I would have used a harsher tone on the TC. I don't see anything wrong with what these "old farts" are doing but the attitude the TC is displaying is pretty worrying.

Maybe you should try talking to them... make yourself some new friends. I'm sure you could learn quite a bit from these guys. They may also learn something from you. What they're doing isn't hurting anyone. Why does it bother you so much that you have to come here and rant about it? What difference does it make where they decide to hang out? Chances are, they've been doing this since before you were born.

I don't know if it's "worrying," but he sure must be sensitive. If a small group of older men drinking coffee and minding their own business bothers him, I can't imagine how he handles other annoying things, like...

  • Drunken, obnoxious frat boys at the sports bar
  • Twenty guys riding past the park on their incredibly loud Harleys
  • Dude with a $500 car and a $5,000 sound system trying to blow out your windows with his bass
  • The 4th of July

The list goes on.

Yes. This was a common thing when I lived in ND as well. Every restaurant in town would have several groups like this early in the morning. I always thought it looked nice and kind of hoped I'd have a group like someday when I'm older. Meet up at Perkins, have some hashbrowns, talk about the good old days.

What I hate about gas stations is the fact that they're all operated by old women who have no idea how to add change or use a register, making even the simplest transactions last for a good thirty minutes.

If this is an attack on old people thread, they are not annoying me in shops as much as pretty much everyone else these days. The reason is they seem to be the only people around other then myself who still buy some stuff with CASH! I fricking hate it I do, I got two people in front of me in the que and both the pricks want to buy a single lettace with an out of date Visa, in which they got to pull out the more recent one, then they got to type in the pin, wait for comformation and then faff about with 'Cash Back' just to waste even more of our time.

Makes me want to slam their faces into a cashpoint and say "Look! Use this!"

I'm a guy and I dont have anything against other old people but these are old men that are farmers who just hang out at the gas station where they should be somewhere else to chat and drink coffee. Old MEN FARMERS. You know how old men farmers are when they get together. Always talk talk smack etc. Plus they give you stares too.

And speaking of old women who work at the gas stations. Yeah we got 2 old women that are in their 60s that work the subs area and at the checkout, They know how to turn on and off the gas pumps but they're lousy with keeping track of the sales for pop bottles like if you buy one bottle of pop from a sale of 2 for 1.00 or 2 for 2.22 then you get screwed and have to pay full price for one bottle which you should be really paying half of the regular price of one bottle of pop

and to think the stuff they grew went into both of the things you bought in your specific examples. Without them you wouldn't have even be able to get that food in the first place, but no how dare they have a conversation at the same gas station you happen to be in at the time.

next time say "Excuse me" if you need to get by. You'll find that as you go through life A.) most people are good, and B.) if they don't seem good, it is usually through lack of communication or a misplaced sense of misunderstanding.

Tis true. Besides, older folk are a mine of information. You can learn a lot from them, especially former farmers.

Doesn't seem like they're doing anything annoying, well maybe I guess standing in your way. But if they want to sit at the coffee table and chitchat there's nothing wrong with that.

I grew up in a small farming town. This was normal to have groups of farmers talking around the gas station. I never bothered me at all. I don't get annoyed by groups of old ppl talking in a gas station. What's annoying are groups of teenagers at theaters, malls, & any major event (county fair comes to mind). I actually stopped going to the theater as frequently cause I got fed up with the teenagers I always seemed to sit behind that check their text messages every 2 mins and talk to their friends during the entire movie about the texts they are getting.

Plus they tend to be loud when in groups.
