Am I the only one who has to look up the lyrics when I listen to artists like Tupac, Nas, Eminem and theother Lyrically gifted?

Wow...the lyrics make the whole song. Without lyrics, it doesn't mean anything..I barely every care about the lyrics of a song.. I just like how it flows together to make music.

Lyrics do not make the whole song. I'm sorry but to say they do is pretty musically ignorant.
Well maybe in hip hop they do
[QUOTE="EMOEVOLUTION"]Wow...the lyrics make the whole song. Without lyrics, it doesn't mean anything.. What? How doesn't it mean anything. Every song is singing about the same 3 things anyways.. there is no variation. Besides word choice and the order of the words.. the meaning is ultimately almost always the same. Every song is about Love, Hope, or Disappointment. I listen to music for the energy it brings and the general mood it sets.. not for what some guy is saying.I barely every care about the lyrics of a song.. I just like how it flows together to make music.

I would hardly call 2pac "lyrically gifted". He was an iconic influence in gangsta rap, and therefore he deserves immense credit, but his lyrics naturally sounded good more than they utilized punch lines and metaphors.
Ey, Heavy rock is also - near impossible for me understand.. Tool, Pantera, Slayer, Carcass...Those definately need some written lyrics to understand. But I hear what ur sayin, if I just wanna kick back with some instrumental mood - Rock has its strong points.i can't understand hip hop past the 90's
i love the early days and 90's but now......
that's why i'm a metalheadGC4ever
Nah, I can usually understand it ok and I'm Bunny Bread white. I can't always relate to things like rolling with my g's, having 'female dogs' by my side, wheels that keep on rolling, and throwing money in the air, but at least I can understand the words.
If there's any kind of screaming in the music, then that I can't understand.
Tupac and Nas both have terrible lyrics. I don't understand why someone would consider their lyrics good.

i guess it all depends on who is singing
cause i can understand some but others are like wtf are you saying
*looks up lyrics online*
If you think those artists are hard to understand, look up the song Midwest Choppers 2 by Tech N9ne ft. K-Dean, Krayzie Bone and there's an extended version w/ Twista but he didn't do his verse in time for the deadline.
i can understand most of what tupac is saying, sometimes if i want to know i would have to look it up though
whatever  Compelling argument against my opinion. :|[QUOTE="Assassin1349"]

Lyrics and flow. If the delivery is weak the song is usually weak, even if the lyrics are good.

How does it not? Hip-hop stems from rap, and rap is poetry. Certainly the beat plays an important role, but having a hip-hop song with just a good beat but terrible lyrics is still a poor song.
This is extremely laughable. If you think lyrics "make" true hip hop, you need a history lesson.trust_nobody

Maybe the songs you have listened only talk about those things but there is a lot of music out there with lyrics about a wide variety of subjects outside of those you mentioned.
I do agree that lyrics do not make up the whole song (although some do revolve a lot around them) though, at least for me. But they can definitely improve or damage a song.

I wouldn't say that is ignorant at all. It's not rap OR hip hop without lyrics. otherwise, it just rhythm and beats. I once told this dude that lil wayne is a terrible rapper. he then said, "all you care about is lyrics". Well, DUH, by that statement you agree that the lyrics that lil wayne says suck. So that tells me, he likes the producer, or the person who made the beat. chances are lil wayne never makes his beats, which make perfect sense, because he never writes down his lyrics anymore.
I'm starting to think that the new generation of rap and hiphop listeners aren't intrested in lyrics. which means, the producers and DJ's are the reals stars, not lil wayne and drake.
and dont get me wrong. beats mean alot to me, as I really only listen to slow bass style in contrast to mainstream artists which is more about treble.

Example.
The lyrics are pretty non-sensical, but the flow is pretty good and I think that makes the song pretty enjoyable.
I love when artist put the lyrics in their album booklets.
I go to OHHLA.com for lyrics.
Currently listening to Eminem - Relapse: The Refill (album coming out December 21st 2009)
"Buffalo Bill" --- lyrics are right here
and
"Music Box" --- lyrics are right here
^^
two of my favorite tracks, I can't wait for the album to come out.

its must be the down south rappers you listen to they have that accent, except jeezy i understand his lyrics, but other than that theres rappers that lyrically break it down for you to understand, if its still hard for you to understand then just give up. And also productivity makes music the lyrics beat and flow to it

I think people who bash hip hop as a whole are morons, I am sorry but thats how I feel. There is good in every genre, I listen to everything from Frank Sinatra, Nas, Prince, Beach Boys and Slayer. Every genre has amazing music, open up your F'in minds.
Sorry for the rant :x
The only time I'll ever look up something is when a rapper makes some obscure pop culture reference, for example, "he's like D.B. Cooper, out with the moolah." I didn't know who D.B. Cooper was until: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D._B._Cooper
