I'm looking for a used sub compact two seater that can be had for under $5,000. Power steering and the ability to handle tight corners is mandatory.

I don't know about quality but alot of the 90's era Japanese cars really intrigue me particuarly the Suzuki Sidekick/Samurai/X90 because they remind me of Jurassic Park. I also like the oldschool BMW's/Beetles.

Any advice?

Never heard intrigued and Suzuki Samurai used in the same sentence before. Seriously though, those cars are garbage. If you want a good subcompact for that price range, get an older Carolla or Civic.

This. Very few reliable and safe cars can be purchased and maintained for under $5K these days. And when you are shopping for one that is... you don't go for a sports car.

I have for the last 4 years of my life and it leaves much to be desired. Having to plan your day 2 hours in advance as a result isn't fun and tires you out.

I actually agree with pirate on this one. Suzukis are terrible cars and have been for a while. They do ok for motorcycles but their cars are garbage. A Corolla or a Civic is a good choice and you can probably get a decent 2000 model for that price range.

A little crude, but like he said, you definitely have to come back with more of an idea of what you want. I would personally look for a car that is year 2000+ just because any older than that and upkeep is going to increase with older cars. Most cars are not two seaters, if you are looking for one, nissan 350z, Toyota MR2, SMART car...ect. I would at least get a coupe with a back seat just so you do have a little room for people, or if you need to haul anything past a bag of groceries ever.

Yeah, but all of those compact trucks were from the 90's and are not really produced anymore. If he wants a small truck, either go with a Ford Ranger with a shortbox, a Jeep Wrangler or something like that from recent years.

As much as I like ranglers, they are crazy overpriced for what you're getting. As for mid-sized trucks, I'd go with a used Taco or Frontier before a Ranger.

I know and I'm thankful. My response was directed at the elitist tightwad who felt the best response to my questions was a derisive and flippant response. People like that are why people who don't have knowledge of a particular subject are afraid to ask questions.

Toyota trucks from the late '80's and early '90's are the absolute best. The engine will go and go, even after the truck around it falls to bits.

The fact you are an idiot with no idea what you are looking for (in the OP) made recommending something near impossible. Why would your ignorance/stupidity make me angry? I just said you need to learn what a compact car is/reassess your criteria before we can help you It is like me saying 'I want a truck' and then saying 'you know...something like a mini cooper' You at least need some basic knowledge in order to receive help. do some 'homework' yourself first and don't just depend on others for everything

That would be cool if I was looking for your approval you tiresome pedant. Before you burst in here with your belligerent vomit I did indeed get some advice that fit all of my criteria the Honda Civic but no one of the cars I gave as an example was wrooooong.

Because you know Gamespot is such a serious academic environment.

I don't need to do my "homework" and you know why? Because other people will do it for me! I happen to be one of those people myself when it comes to stuff I'm interested in but thats probably because I don't care way too much about the incidental accuracy of some strangers post.

check out craigslist in the used car section also make sure you get it to a shop before you pay for it. Also guys talking about extras don't mean jack to the value of the car.

Why are you singling out good handling? Does your daily commute involve driving on Mullholland Drive? Unless your planning on racing this thing on a race track, I don't understand why 95% of all cars on the road can't accomadate your handling needs.

The Samurai was just on US Top Gear because they showed how easier it is to roll it over in a turn. So really not what your looking for. IDK about subcompact but there are tons of good small japanese cars that could be had for under 5K. A nissan Sentra SE-R, Civic, Celica, Prelude, 300z (could be hard to find), 240sx (again could be tough), lancer, and more im sure. Now they could be not in great condition but most of the cars you could do an engine swap with a much better motor and tons of suspension mods for handling. Technically to do more we would have no know your general zip code since prices can vary widely from region to region.
