HAHA yea, EPIC REPLY!!!

"Another parent whining about how much time their kids spend on machines? Tell me.. Who raised these kids? Who disciplines these kids? Who bought them their computers and their phones?

You did. The previous generation. YOU made the conscious decision to spoil them with more crap and less hard work, they just let you raise them like they are supposed to.

If you really ask me who the "dumbest" generation is, I'd say it's you. It's like all of a sudden people forgot how to raise a kid. You just point the blame at them as if it was their job to raise themselves into fine young men and women. Well, look at that! It's not their job; it's yours.

So get off your lazy ass and take your kid's phone away, if you really think it's such a big deal. Problem solved. I'd expect an English Professor to employ a bit more common sense than this."

Damn freaking straight.

I've seen recent engineering graduates who are utterly incapable of performing basic arithmetic without the assistance of a calculator. Yeah, that's stupid.

I'd agree that this generation maybe a little bit lazier (tiny tiny bit) than othes, but in no way are we more stupid than past generations. No matter the generation, there will be stupid things that are done and previous generations did make some very big stupid mistakes.

yea, I dont want to be a jerk or anything, but engineers are some of the dumbest and most arrogant people I have ever met.

Sure, they can help build a dam, but they lack common sense a lot of the time and have ignored the fundamental, important knowledge.

I know I am generalizing, but I went to a huge engineering school and know enough engineers to make this observation. Also, my best friend is an engineer and not like that, so I know all are not like that.

We are stupider...the fact that we don't have to expend any energy to find information doesn't make us smart.

i used to go to the library. Trust me, it is not that much more difficult than getting on the internet and syphoning through the 99% of the BS to get to the 1% of good information.

At least at the library when you geta book it is credible.

Using the internet and remaining credible in anything you write using it as resources is definitely a lot harder imo.

I go to Colorado School of Mines (a Very good Engineering School) and I must say if an Engineering Graduate can't do Basic Arithmetic without a calculator it's more the schools fault... and your Generalizing seems to be completely wrong compared with what I've seen here...

Hey, we're not the generation that started filling the air with carbon, cut down forests to fill with McMansions to drive SUVs 40 miles to work, started wars in the Middle East, or put the interests of corporations before the interests of middle and lower class. Our elders sure are ones to speak about making dumb decisions...

yea, my generalizing I admit is localized. I went to a very good, very hard to get into school (I slipped through the cracks on that one), but anyway the school I went to is Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and this college is sooooo high on its own farts that when people graduate, they think theyre gods...this is especially true for engineers, as they are told that A.) this school is the best, and B.) engineers from this school and super good!!!

So yea, my generalizations, in hind sight, are targeted for the most part at Cal Poly engineering graduates.

Yes I LOVE this reply.

I am so sick of hearing this crap. People go "OMG the kids don't care about school and are being wild!!!"

And? What were you like as a child/teenager? I can assure you previous generations were much crazier at a young age than the modern generation. Not only that, but if your kid is being a problem child you should be teaching them and disciplining them so they end up doing the right things on their own accord.

My parents got me to care about my grades and being smart. They also taught me things that I shouldn't do not just because they said so but because of the bad consequences. At the same time they didn't clamp me down and make me a total prisoner to their thinking. You know what? I see too many horrible parents who can't find the balance at all. They either do NOTHING to teach their kids lessons or they do the exact opposite and are so strict on their kids the kids feel the need to act out and never learn the lessons because they aren't allowed to think for themselves.

yea, I am not going to sit here and say its easy to raise a child. I am sure its very challenging.

But at the same time is it that hard to raise your child right?

We were all kids at some point, and despite generational differences it should not be that difficult for parents to empathize (and thus positively manipulate or influence) with their children.

If anyone is a fan of Greg Giraldo, he covered this beautifully. The most amazing to me is to see how well past generations communicated. Now? There are college student's whose papers I proof read for them, and I swear, some of them are unreadable. We've all become more connected and can communicate so easily with people all over the world, that we've actually forgotten how to communicate.

The first response summed up my feelings pretty well. Yes, people use too many gadgets and such now-a-days and it interferes with out lives, but who's responsibility is it to, you know, raise a child?

What has is happening with Gen Y is just the natural consequence of the WW2 generation doing everything they could to make sure their children have a different kind of life than they did. Sadly, with the vast wealth the US created after WW2 and improved standard of living gave way to something unprecedented in US life, kids being kids all the way till high school graduation. Kids were raised to be utterly carefree, responsibility and maturity was no longer expected. That generation, baby boomers, are seen by more and more historians and experts to be the primary reason for the downfall of the US. The self indulgence, materialism, and short sightedness of that generation is unbelievable. They accomplished nothing with their rebellious attitudes, the civil rights movement was started by the their parents so they cant take claim for that. Thier claim to fame is sexual liberalism, drug use, materialism and selfish disregard for the future. The baby boomers political clout can be shown in their numbers, they outnumber Generation Jones (obama) and Gen X both combined! They have used their influence to bankrupt the US economically and socially.

She says it's due to all the electronics and luxuries of the modern world. The first reply to the article was also kinda funny.

I wouldn't say we are stupid, just lazy

mrbojangles25

Oh yes! Love it.

Yes Gen Y is also known as the "I am a winner" generation and lazy, but there may be hope. Yo all soon will be living through the worst crisis in US history, exceeding even the civil war. Gen Y'ers will be forced to drop their pre conceived notions of the life around them, they will wonder how did things come about. Who is to blame! It wont be long after checking the internet for documents and articles to see where the fault lies. Once the =magnitude of the betrayal is fully seen and felt, it can give way to changing the cry baby generation into respectable human beings who can handle hardship and actually think about the next day.

You all will be soon be able to earn your medal and prove to world what you are really made of!

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/the-demise-of-the-dollar-1798175.html

In the most profound financial change in recent Middle East history, Gulf Arabs are planning – along with China, Russia, Japan and France – to end dollar dealings for oil, moving instead to a basket of currencies including the Japanese yen and Chinese yuan, the euro, gold and a new, unified currency planned for nations in the Gulf Co-operation Council, including Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait and Qatar.

Secret meetings have already been held by finance ministers and central bank governors in Russia, China, Japan and Brazil to work on the scheme, which will mean that oil will no longer be priced in dollars.

The plans, confirmed to The Independent by both Gulf Arab and Chinese banking sources in Hong Kong, may help to explain the sudden rise in gold prices, but it also augurs an extraordinary transition from dollar markets within nine years.

The Americans, who are aware the meetings have taken place – although they have not discovered the details – are sure to fight this international cabal which will include hitherto loyal allies Japan and the Gulf Arabs. Against the background to these currency meetings, Sun Bigan, China's former special envoy to the Middle East, has warned there is a risk of deepening divisions between China and the US over influence and oil in the Middle East. "Bilateral quarrels and clashes are unavoidable," he told the Asia and Africa Review. "We cannot lower vigilance against hostility in the Middle East over energy interests and security."

This sounds like a dangerous prediction of a future economic war between the US and China over Middle East oil – yet again turning the region's conflicts into a battle for great power supremacy. China uses more oil incrementally than the US because its growth is less energy efficient. The transitional currency in the move away from dollars, according to Chinese banking sources, may well be gold. An indication of the huge amounts involved can be gained from the wealth of Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar who together hold an estimated $2.1 trillion in dollar reserves.

The decline of American economic power linked to the current global recession was implicitly acknowledged by the World Bank president Robert Zoellick. "One of the legacies of this crisis may be a recognition of changed economic power relations," he said in Istanbul ahead of meetings this week of the IMF and World Bank. But it is China's extraordinary new financial power – along with past anger among oil-producing and oil-consuming nations at America's power to interfere in the international financial system – which has prompted the latest discussions involving the Gulf states.

Brazil has shown interest in collaborating in non-dollar oil payments, along with India. Indeed, China appears to be the most enthusiastic of all the financial powers involved, not least because of its enormous trade with the Middle East.

China imports 60 per cent of its oil, much of it from the Middle East and Russia. The Chinese have oil production concessions in Iraq – blocked by the US until this year – and since 2008 have held an $8bn agreement with Iran to develop refining capacity and gas resources. China has oil deals in Sudan (where it has substituted for US interests) and has been negotiating for oil concessions with Libya, where all such contracts are joint ventures.

Furthermore, Chinese exports to the region now account for no fewer than 10 per cent of the imports of every country in the Middle East, including a huge range of products from cars to weapon systems, food, clothes, even dolls. In a clear sign of China's growing financial muscle, the president of the European Central Bank, Jean-Claude Trichet, yesterday pleaded with Beijing to let the yuan appreciate against a sliding dollar and, by extension, loosen China's reliance on US monetary policy, to help rebalance the world economy and ease upward pressure on the euro.

Ever since the Bretton Woods agreements – the accords after the Second World War which bequeathed the architecture for the modern international financial system – America's trading partners have been left to cope with the impact of Washington's control and, in more recent years, the hegemony of the dollar as the dominant global reserve currency.

The Chinese believe, for example, that the Americans persuaded Britain to stay out of the euro in order to prevent an earlier move away from the dollar. But Chinese banking sources say their discussions have gone too far to be blocked now. "The Russians will eventually bring in the rouble to the basket of currencies," a prominent Hong Kong broker told The Independent. "The Brits are stuck in the middle and will come into the euro. They have no choice because they won't be able to use the US dollar."

Chinese financial sources believe President Barack Obama is too busy fixing the US economy to concentrate on the extraordinary implications of the transition from the dollar in nine years' time. The current deadline for the currency transition is 2018.

The US discussed the trend briefly at the G20 summit in Pittsburgh; the Chinese Central Bank governor and other officials have been worrying aloud about the dollar for years. Their problem is that much of their national wealth is tied up in dollar assets.

"These plans will change the face of international financial transactions," one Chinese banker said. "America and Britain must be very worried. You will know how worried by the thunder of denials this news will generate."

Iran announced late last month that its foreign currency reserves would henceforth be held in euros rather than dollars. Bankers remember, of course, what happened to the last Middle East oil producer to sell its oil in euros rather than dollars. A few months after Saddam Hussein trumpeted his decision, the Americans and British invaded Iraq.
