From the Artile:

Radiation from cell phones can possibly cause cancer, according to the World Health Organization. The agency now lists mobile phone use in the same "carcinogenic hazard" category as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform.

Before its announcement Tuesday, WHO had assured consumers that no adverse health effects had been established.

A team of 31 scientists from 14 countries, including the United States, made the decision after reviewing peer-reviewed studies on cell phone safety. The team found enough evidence to categorize personal exposure as "possibly carcinogenic to humans."

I think because of all the speculation over the years, the World Health Organization has never really thrown their hat into the ring.

I've kinda always assumed it's not good to keep any kind of two-way transmitter strapped to one's belt near their crotch or held up against their skull for extended periods.

Colliding particles may create black holes. Doesn't mean you need to worry about it.

Anything we do in life can lead to cancer really. I wouldnt be suprised if cell phones increase your risk by like 0.1%. All the more reason to use the speaker function which more and more people do now anyway.

I can't stand it when people do that in public. Why in the world does everyone else have to listen to someone's dopey conversation?

I really hate this whole "may cause" and "increase the risk of" garbage. Anything one does that could result in cell death has the chance of causing cancer. Even the radiation we are exposed to on a daily basis (which are considered "safe" amounts) has the potential to cause cancer. Cancer is a universal human disease that changes with every person and thing it effects. It is a part of the pathway towards death. Some just avoid it longer than others.

If anyone's interested in the reasonable, non-alarmist interpretation of the WHO report, see this.

Long story short: Cell phones probably don't cause cancer (there's no well described mechanism by which non-ionizing radiation can cause long-term biological changes), but a few studies have shown some weak evidence linking cell phones to increased cancer rates, and the subject needs more study anyway. So until there's some definitive proof either way, we should err on the side of caution, but be reasonable about it (to put things into perspective, sunlight is all-but-certainly more dangerous).

I'm still not worried about it until they find a mechanism by which ionizing radiation can induce mutations in DNA.

Exactly.. I've heard that drinking out of a water bottle with frozen water in it also causes cancer..
