I've never been the 'new kid' and I will start at the start of next year. (I live in Australia)

So is it really that hard changing schools? Any tips?

Thanks guys :D

I've had to do it a lot (as a military kid). Even though I'm a bit shy, people have generally been really receptive to new students in my experience. I usually made friends quite quickly. Just be nice to people.

I only had to move schools once because my parents moved house, that was between grade 2 and grade 3 though so I'm not sure how much help my take on it is. It wasn't too troubling for me because one of my cousins went to the new school I was going to so I just hung round with her til I had my own friends. High school changing can go one of two ways I think: You're either accepted straight away as a cool kid, or you're pretty much left to fend for yourself in the wild. I saw both of those happen at my high school, one a year 8 transfer, the other a year 10 transfer (the year 10 transfer turned out to be the cool kid in this scenario). I imagine that since the students you'll be hanging with will be older they'll just accept you anyway though. I found that by year 11 any sort of clique's that had developed in the previous 4 years had all but evaporated and everyone was cool with everyone else. Good luck!

I changed schools in third grade, it wasnt bad though since one of my best friends just happened to be moving to the same school at the same time. Literally probably the best coincidence of my life :P

I've changed schools about 13-14 times and I'm only 17 and it definitely can be really hard. I change schools on average once every year or two and it's extremely hard to get situated. When you go to a new school and you're the new kid you have to realize that many of the friend circles have been around since elementary/middle school and breaking into them is extremely tough because if you're unwilling to approach anybody and start a conversation then making friends can be extremely difficult unless people approach you which doesn't happen often.

Recently when I switched schools last year into yet again another new school I had a friend come with me and I met another friend within the first week. When you're switching alone you have to be prepared for the possibility of being alone for a bit and possibly even longer. Chances are you will meet somebody but if you don't then don't let it bother you. It's really hard if you did have a huge friend circle and people respected you and knew you and then you go to a new school and it seems nobody cares or even wants to talk to you. You kind of just have to not let it get to you.

It is hard switching schools but starting as a new kid isn't all that bad because it's a breath of fresh air. Just grab a school map and don't be afraid to ask people for directions because you never know you could make a friend.

It's a bit tricky, but for me it proved to be a HUGE improvement when I had to double because of school fatigue. You don't even need a lot of social skills to get a few friends. If more, even better. Good luck.

Find out who the alpha dog is at your new school. Show up to school with a crazy new hair-do and hardcore clothes. Then challenge the kid to a hardcore gangsta freestyle rap-off. Mission complete.

I moved around a lot as a child and due to my social inadequacies had difficulty adapting to my new environment. However, being that this was all before the age of 12 I have some difficulty giving advice in this area. This is not to say I have not had to transition from one school to another (high school to university and then to seminary). During those processes what has helped me most considerably is not living in the past. We must be content where we are in order to enjoy our present moments.

Just changing schools won't fix the problem, you need to work harder. Also I don't know when they start school in Australia, but when did you find out you were repeating.
